Fall Ratings 2015

As always, the general numbers don't tell too much.
Most Buffalo stations showed a decline, except WGR.
They got their football season spike, in spite of a typical moribund
Bills season.

97 Rock sagged and ALT Buffalo slid down to the abyss.
Even XMAS Muzak failed to bring in more sheep for STAR.
NPR remains the only bright spot for fully functional minds...

And in the Rochester beauty contest numbers - WDKX bested WBEE, ending their 13-book winning streak. This as Bob Barnett gets a promotion.

WDKX has been #1 in the 18-34 for a long time. They finally got enough critical mass to win 6+. To me, this shows the strength of urban radio, not only in Rochester, but nationally. WBLK consistently ranks high in Buffalo, and a day may come when they take #1. The other story about WDKX is it's locally owned. Locally owned WHUR consistently does well in DC (with a syndicated morning show), and there are several others.

This is a perfect example of making assumptions based on Google searches and not with experience in the actual markets.

First off - why is WDKX's local ownership a "story"? They've been locally owned since day 1 - and are still owned by the same family. What does that have to do with ratings success? The argument could be made that being locally-owned is actually a disadvantage since they don't have the resources available like the big, bad corporate owners have (have you checked their website, for example?).

Second, Buffalo and Rochester couldn't be any more different psychographically despite the fact they're less than an hour drive apart. Anyone who's lived here knows that and knows format performance varies greatly.
