Fall Ratings Thoughts?

Wish i knew the skinny on certain demos BUT.....The BEAT ahead of KISS???? Kat knocks SOC down? AND it's interesting how irrelevant the rock formats have become? Any potential format switches? Somebody's gotta launch a true HOT AC, that's the gap in this market.

KISS might of had a fighting chance if they'd quit overplaying songs. WKQC....there's another station that needs some serious revamping. Ok, so they have John Robinson in the mornings, good choice if you ask me. However, this Kate girl he has on with him, not a smart move. She sounds green, not much of a personality by any means. If anything, Holly Haze should have been the choice for John....Just my opinion. Then there's the music. Same song's over and over and over again. More of a lame AC than a true AC or even a Hot AC which is what Charlotte really needs.

Back to KISS...Ace and TJ carry that station, Taylor Shay is great for Mid-Day's..Chad..Oh boy..where are they getting these interns? Everyday it's someone different with absolutly no radio voice what so ever, let alone any experience. The O-show...where's the entertainment? His jokes are lame, the phone bit's date back to the early 70's. In my opinion, his show is flat; not in the least funny. Quite honestly it's rather boring.

It will be interesting to see what if any changes will be made. Knowing the PD they have, nothing will change

I think the folks over at Kiss really do a good job. Not my kind of music but I like the airstaff. As for the lame jokes, I'll take a lame joke any day rather than dull liners.

As for 106.5 their 12+ has always looked bad. Maybe they have good ratings in a certain demo but I never see anything but 12+. Maybe they are out of format ideas.

The Beat pulling ahead of Kiss is a shocker and I'm sure Kiss will fight back by the next book.

All the rock stations need a facelift, especially 106.5. The End need to decide if it wants to stay alternative or just go active rock. They've been inconsistent for so long and almost painful to listen to. It may be time for a rebrand.

I'm surprised the Spanish stations aren't rating higher than they are. Perhaps La Raza's move to 106.1 will give them a jump. I wonder if 102.3's new format will affect Kiss and the Beat.

When there are only 4 group owners in town who own most of the stations I wonder if ratings really matter that much?

CBS
Clear Channel
Greater Media
Radio One

I think there are already too many Spanish stations for the market (which is more than just Charlotte). This isn't Miami.

Hot AC would be a nice choice, especially since 107.9 is mostly talk now...but not sure if they would try that considering that there would be overlap with 'LYT.

Hot AC never gave 107.9 big numbers when they were doing it.....

106.5 tends to score pretty decent numbers with young men but not enough to really impact their 12 plus numbers. I'd still flip it to a Hot AC but it's "LITE" sister could suffer the consequences.

The problem with KISS lies with the PD. He's been riding the coat tails of Ace & TJ for too long. The punchline of every joke in that building ends with the PD's name.

What's up with the infatuation of Spanish on this Board? I agree with Sheridan about that.

Very seldom has HOT AC been a viable format with the exception in the early to mid 90s with theonslaught of mass appeal artists like Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morresette. HOT AC has been dead for years. Young female adults are on CHR or Country.

I saw something in the Observer about the three stations going after 18-34 listeners. The End was not one of them. Even though it was an old article, The End has supposedly being targeting that audience for years.

In the early 90s Top 40 wasn't a popular format. Hot AC took its place. And country was also hot.

Ha ha ha...enough said right Fitz?
Seriously...90's was sooooo Top 40! country was big too, don't get me wrong. I was working in country at that time, but ohhh so wanted CHR!!! It was the place to be!

You were working in Country, but you wanted CHR?

You should've been glad to have been working in any format.

Your "place to be" is not on the Radio.

When top 40 stations started loading up on rhythmic music in the very late eighties, they started blowing off millions of adults, and especially the 'soccer moms' out there, who could easily listen to the local top 40 station with their kids, resulting in routine double-digit ratings from coast to coast.

KIIS/Los Angeles started that disastrous trend of overreacting after Emmis launched KPWR (Power 106) in 1986, and it soared to #1 in less than a year, thereby creating the playbook on 'How to demolish a heritage top 40 powerhouse'.

That episode was repeated in dozens of markets, with San Antonio & Indianapolis among the most noteworthy instances, which is why the top 40 reporting panels at R&R lost over 60 reporters between 1988 and 1998, and has lost over 100 reporters since 'We Are The World' was #1 24 years ago this week when the CHR/Pop panel had 235 reporters.

Hot AC should be the best sounding format out there right now, certainly as mass-appeal friendly as top 40 was during its glory days throughout most of the eighties before it started playing vulgarity loaded rap music and adults and kids deserted the format in droves.

But that dreaded disease known as 'clusterization' has prevented tons of Hot ACs from having beefier ratings, since a properly programmed station would definitely take a chunk of listeners from top 40, country, rock, alternative, AC and other formats, and today's corporate behemoths can't tolerate that; there's simply too much 'defensive' programming out there as opposed to really going after another station in your market, and particularly one in your cluster.

The country battle between WSOC and WKKT will get lots more interesting starting this Monday (April 13th), as former KKGO/Los Angeles PM drive star and recent 93.3 The Wolf (WWFF/Huntsville) morning drive personality Todd Baker takes over afternoon drive on 'The Kat'; he's hilarious, and you're going to enjoy him a lot if country is your thing.
