FALL RATINGS

Looks like the darling of the market last year, WQBW "The Brew", is falling on hard times, dropping nearly 3 shares since the spring. Meanwhile, WHQG "The Hog", is surprising critics with their best numbers in quite awhile, including the number one spot in the money demo, 25-54.

From reading Tim Cuprisin's column, I gather the new WISN morning experiment isn't yet working.

In the "Christmas Music Wars", WRIT clobbered WMYX and WOKY. WOKY hits a recent low.

In the "Sports Wars", WSSP is a no-show, WAUK is not looking much better, near rock bottom. I guess the sports winner is WTMJ. When you own every major sports franchise, they are tough to compete with.

Looks like the regional Mexican format is doing well on WDDW with the highest numbers that frequency has ever seen.

I looked at the Chicago numbers. WGN hits an historic low... 4.9!!

and Congrats to WTMJ...still on top in double digits after all these years.

I just noticed that Milwaukee fell back to market #33, from last year, when they went up to market #32. I believe Hurricane Katrina changed the rankings for a number of markets. The oldies listeners were probably the ones that helped WRIT beat WMYX in the Christmas format. WMYX & the old WLTQ had much of the same demo, but not sure what WMYX's success was then. As for WOKY, playing Christmas music wasn't going to boost their ratings when standards is their regular format. Also WOKY is on the AM dial and on a frequency that doesn't cover the entire market at night. WDDW has no competition for any spanish language format, so of course ratings will do well. As for predecessor WEXT, it was low because the station was primarily marketed as a Racine area station instead of a Milwaukee station, though that changed somewhat when the transmitter was moved to Ch 49's tower.

WEXT was always marketed at Racine and Kenosha areas. Thats where the remotes/promotion were, thats where the advertisers were.

During The Wolf days, they had plenty of remotes in both areas. But the advertisers were still Racine-Kenosha for the most part.

With the studios and offices being in the Kenosha area, it couldn't have been very easy to be a "Milwaukee" station being 30 miles away.

As for WRIT, with the playlist they had (Lots of 70s and even 80s AC) they may be grabbing some of the old WLTQ listeners with that. I noticed how they parked Delilah on WOKY. I think WRIT would have been a better place for her considering.

When WMYX did all Christmas (with WLTQ still alive) WMYX always won the Christmas battle. WMYX has only been doing it since 2003.

WOKY has been doing it for a long time. I first cought them doing all Christmas in the late 90s.
______________

Two observations for your consideration.

WOKY still does very well for an AM music station.

With the saturation of classic hits/rock/oldies, maybe it's time for a full market signal to try country again. Toppling the great 106 may not be as hard as everyone would think. The market may be ready for someone new.

New Country (WMIL)
New Country & The Legends (WEXT, etc)
Classic Country
Rockin Country (WDMP)
Americana
Southern Gospel

are the options.
______________

The country share in Milwaukee is great for one station, but may not be big enough to split. If the new country competitor grabbed say 33%-40% of WMILs audience (which is a big IF) the prize wouldn't be that great. Some would say the country share would grow with a second station, I thnk it would only grow with a non head on approach, for example like the HANK station in Indianapolis which is sort of like a country version of JACK.

Out West several markets with country shares similar to Milwaukee recently got second country stations, those markets include Seattle, Denver, Las Vegas, and Fresno. Any station considering a switch to country in Milwaukee may want to keep an eye on those markets to see how the new country stations do against their heritage competitors.

Through the 1970s and even into the 80s several markets had double digit AM stations. In 2006, very few remain. So I certainly agree, congrats to WTMJ.
