Family Radio & WJFR

With some of the Family Radio stations selling I was thinking how nice it'd be for Flagler College's WFCF to pick up WJFR to sign it off. Alternatively it could be sold to UNF or Edward Waters College or JU for college radio. After all, what's one less religious operator in Jacksonville? You still have about 20 options from which to choose.

Living in Pensacola where we have two NPR non-coms and around a dozen religious non-coms I've always dreamed of one of the religious stations selling to a local school or community radio group. I have never read anything about a religious non-com selling to a secular broadcaster anywhere in the south-east. I have read about religious organizations buying secular stations. Is it even practical to ponder the possibility of a religious non-com winding up in the hands of a secular college for a Progressive/AAA/Free Form/Variety student radio format?

Actually, I know of several religious operators that will not sell to other religious broadcasters, or if they will, they have to make sure that they:

1. agree on teachings and
2. that the buying party is going to use the stations as a ministry outreach and not to make money.

The ones that I know of are very careful about those points. They are very aware that there are bad apples using the stations more to collect donations and giving the sincere broadcasters a bad reputation, hence the general reluctance to sell to other religious broadcasters.

I think it is given that Family Radio doesn't really want to sell to other religious outfits (but it has with EMF). If they don't want to sell to other religious outfits then the only other options are college, community & public stations for their N.C.E. stations. Plus, there's a 1st time for everything!

I've always thought that 88.7 would be a good frequency for Edward Waters College because of where the transmitter is located, which is in the urban core of Jacksonville. As for programming, they could play a variety of music catering to the urban audience such as Smooth Jazz, Old School R&B, Neo Soul, and Urban Gospel on the weekends. If they do this and use social media to spread the word about their radio station, they could take away a number of listeners from the commercial Urban AC stations "V101.5" and the new "Hot 106.5".

For the past several days, I noticed that WJFR has been off the air. Does anybody know the reason why they are currently off the air? Is it off the air because of the financial difficulties of the parent company Family Radio or are they having technical issues with faulty equipment or transmitter?

At 3pm on August 1, 2013, WJFR returned to the airwaves. I guess there were some technical difficulties that caused them to go off the air for a while.
