Family Radio

I believe it was the great David Kaye who asked Harold Camping to give up his radio stations, since he wouldn't need them after May 21, 2011...

I love the graphic on Family Radio's website -- "2012" in a circle with a slash through it:

Family Radio has owned WCUE-1150 in Cuyahoga Falls/Akron, Ohio for nearly 25 years..Of all the Radio mnistries they could have ended up with, BBN, Bott, even Salem, sad to me the station ended up with this crackpot..

Gee I thought the world ended several times in the last years according to the Big Guy lol!

Wow, can't believe they've owned 'CUE for 25 years.

I still remember it as "CUE-1150", in its final days as a top 40 outlet, then with "Music of Your Life" and straight ahead local MOR until Mr. Camping and his group bought it.

...hell, Camping bought the late and lamented WNYW New York, the shortwave station that broadcast CBS and ABC news and bilingual (English and Spanish) pop music to Latin America in October 1973. They changed the call sign to WYFR, and moved the transmitter site from Massachusetts to Florida a few years after that. A small little bit of WNYW still lives on over the internet. One of the most complete airchecks of ABC Radio's first hour of JFK Assassination coverage is at http://newstalgia.crooksandliars.com/gordonskene/november-22nd-started-any-other-day-19 - the Spanish-language bulletin in the last minutes of the mp3 indicates the source was WNYW, or "Radio New York" as they branded themselves at the time, and most likely a WNYW engineer or disc jockey was playing the Doris Day record at the very beginning of the recording, heard the closed-circuit alert for a bulletin over the ABC network line, and started the aircheck skimmer...

Actually only 24 years (November 24, 1986)..I  enjoyed the more conservative Christian music they played as no other Christian station  in the area played that kind of music at the time (still don't)..Also remember that for a time they had more of a local programming angle with a daily news-public affairs program (and regular visits by the Cuyahoga Falls Mayor). They had a local station manager by the name of Dave Ficere, who eventually left for Family Life Radio in Phoenix/Tucson, Arizona.  Once Ficere left, all local programming was dropped and it became basically a East Coast simulcast/translator for  Family Radio out of Oakland..Most of the programs/personalities are actually fairly acceptable to me, but Camping and his "out there" teachings sadly overshadow anything else they do there...

I think I still have on Cassette Tape parts of "Family Radio Christmas"
in 1986 and 87..

Aren't WNYW-TV the calls of New York's (Fox-owned) TV Channel 5?

"The Bible guarantees it". I can't wait to see what their spin will be after May 21st comes and goes without incident. "Oh, God must have changed his mind". Uh-Huh.

They are now. They weren't in 1973, when WNYW was the callsign on the shortwave station with studios in NYC (at the old CBS building, 485 Madison) and transmitter in Scituate that had previously been WRUL and would later become WYFR, moving its studios to Oakland and transmitter to Okeechobee, Florida.

Mmm-hmmm. I think it'll be easier for good old Harold Camping to come up with a revised Family Radio 2011 calendar, based on ancient Assyrian (or, what the heck, Canadian) writings.

Can't change the Bible* ... so why not change the calendar?

Well said, Tim. Harold Camping will go down in the history books as a radio frontiersman, particularly as it relates to investing in a lark known as FM. For decades Family Radio was a mainstream, orthodox conservative radio outlet which had some respect in secular circles of broadcasting. That said, the last 10 years have been an abomination both in the biblical sense, as well as in the offense to the People of the United States (the purported Owners of the Spectrum) as Camping drove single-mindedly into a withering, cultish monologue praising himself for figuring out what no one else could in biblical revelation. It would be nice if he would put his money where his mouth is and assign his many broadcast holdings to some deserving entity after 5/21/10. Most of the visitors to this board would loath the idea of the licenses being transferred to a Christian network. However I think it would be pretty cool if Family Radio's choice licenses went to EMF if in turn EMF was willing to release all its area holdings in translator and educational frequencies!

Why? Would it be any worse than transferring it to any other monolithic group, like Clear Channel?

(And I'm guessing that most, if not all, of Clear Channel's "brain trust" are forthright Christians, at that.)

10 years? It's been 25-30 years, I think, that ol' Harold has been 'out there'. Previous to that, I don't know, he may have been fairly mainstream.
