Fans

We had a 110v fan go out on our Nautel AM (1 of 6) and I called them to ask them for cost and the 6 incher is now at $215. Year and a half ago, it was $149. What is the damn thing now made of gold?? Is anyone else out there getting fans somewhere else that are a little cheaper and reliable?

I got one about a year ago for my Harris Quest frpom Newark Electronics. Price was half what Harris wanted for it.

In addition to Newark, I also like Allied Electronics, especially for semiconductors.

yes, Grainger is a great source for muffin fans for transmitters - we have gotten several for our Thales/Comark rig

Just bought a replacement 460vac 3 phase blower motor for my harris dx-25 from grainger, was $148. I didn't even check with harris. Learned that lesson long ago..

You're probably OK checking out the actual maker of the fan and ordering one of that model number from an alternative source like Grainger.

It being part of a transmitter, which lives a hermit existence, the one issue that presents itself with other motor-driven devices probably does not apply. Years ago I maintained a flock of cartridge machines with direct-drive motors. Could buy them direct from the manufacturer really cheap. Problem was that the motors bought that way soon became noisy. The company that made the motors was UMC Electronics. Same company that manufactured the cart machines (Beaucart). Their own cart machine operation was getting SELECTED motors off the assembly line...equipped with instrument grade bearings rather than the ordinary ones. Same motors were sold for many purposes and there was no way, outside the factory (then in West Haven, CT) to tell the good ones from the ordinary ones!

To their credit, the good ones were sold by the Beaucart parts department at the same price as you'd pay for the ordinary ones ordered through the regular UMC supply houses.

Was a good company with a good product that never gained the traction of many of the name brands....

I NEVER buy parts directly from Thales for either of our Thales transmitters (the Thales and the Comark), and the factory is literally down the street from me. (I know quite a few people who work there in fact, they're friends of mine).
