Progress occasionally introduces problems that society does not have the resources to solve, thus, preventing further progress or allowing social collapse.
Collapse of that bridge out in Minnesota meant people couldn't get to or from where they were going.

Going to the Carolinas, as ostensibly Stuart has done, is often a one-way trip, because people find they want to just stay there.
