Fantastic word game

Poking my head in was all I needed to do to see that the rumors that Megan McCormick was in the library were completely untrue which was as I'm sure you can imagine a complete disappointment.

A complete disappointment, to say nothing of a fallen countenance would have been the shocking blue looking at us as though we had four heads, but surprisingly they already knew the score, complete with the boardwalk empire deal, better than we, which gave us a tremendous sense of relief.

See? I returned to bold my clue before you know who gave me a thrashing. I wonder how he would know it was I... ;)

A tremendous sense of relief was felt back about page 65 when dmargalotti joined our contribution ranks but who would have thought, back in those earlier days, that he would eventually climb the PowerWorld ladder to that enviable position of Internatioonal Director of Band Camp.

Proud to say I've been here since Day 1 when TFWG (known as simply TFWG back in those days ;) ) was a little different and eventually morphed into what it is today and we had a mostly different set of contributors than the fine people we have today. It'd be nice if some of those people visited us on our anniversary.

Speaking of which:

2 days until our 5th anniversary.

That enviable position of Internatioonal Director of Band Camp, or International even, is one that carries with it the daily pressures and stresses that most would probably not envy.

Two Ladies Talking in Heaven
1st woman: Hi, Wanda!
2nd woman: Hi, Sylvia! How'd you die?
1st woman: I froze to death.
2nd woman: How horrible!
1st woman: It wasn't so bad. After I quit shaking from the cold, I began to get warm & sleepy, and finally died a peaceful death. What about you?
2nd woman: I died of a massive heart attack. I suspected that my husband was cheating, so I came home early to catch him in the act. But instead, I found him all by himself in the den watching TV.
1st woman: So, what happened?
2nd woman: I was so sure there was another woman there somewhere that I started running all over the house looking. I ran up into the attic and searched, and down into the basement. Then I went through every closet and checked under all the beds. I kept this up until I had looked everywhere, and finally I became so exhausted that I just keeled over with a heart attack and died.
1st woman: Too bad you didn't look in the freezer---we'd both still be alive.

I couldn't resist...sorry. roflmao

Most would probably not envy all the daily duties I have as Game Czar but I've learned to lighten my load and to trust more people to do more things.

Thanks for catching the extra o, Miss Silkie. 8)

People will be dancing in the streets and in the PowerWorld and R-I offices tomorrow as we celebrate the 5th anniversary of the longest thread in internet history.

Tomorrow's the big day, folks, govern yourselves accordingly.

The 5th anniversary of the longest thread in internet history will begin with my usual early morning contribution although since tomorrow is a special day, I will try to come up with an extra special contribution.

An extra special contribution is always warranted in any reply, but it just intrinsically feels more special when you're doing it from someplace besides your regular spot that you had to work to get to in order to do your other work, and that makes it feel like you're on a the FWG Commando Mission.

The system won't boot up, Darth. It will go through the boot-up pages, sometimes it will get to the COMPAQ screen, sometimes to the "Start Windows normally/in safe mode" toggle screen, and sometimes into the screen that says "Windows XP" before it boots back out, and never stops anywhere. The hard drive has been running like it's making wheezing noises for a week or two. One diskscan program I did said "Hard drive is fine" and one said the only problem was it was running 143deg F. But I am pretty sure that it has had some partitioning problems since we cobbled it back together (after the laptop died), because I couldn't get updates to install, and some new programs would never install, until I got Google Chrome on it a month or so back.

Is this a good candidate for a Linux box? ;D

Mission Impossible was a great TV show and I always liked to part near the beginning of each episode when the guy's voice could be heard saying "this tape will self destruct in five seconds".

"This tape will self-destruct in five seconds" is unheard of in these parts, because we simply will not accept second best where it counts, by, for and with those other sleazes, having adopted the Scout motto to always be prepared.

The Scout motto to always "Be Prepared" almost always extends to the first Golden Rule of computer usage, one that almost every kid these days should be expected to learn before he reaches second grade, and that is specifically: keep backups of your data and have them ready.

[size=8pt]@quad--
In all likelihood it's not a "partition problem" as you described--if your partition table were messed up you wouldn't even get to the point where it would start booting up (the point at which the Compaq logo goes away.) Sounds like something hosed XP--purely a software problem, not a hardware one. If it were one of my boxes I'd just "quick-erase" wipe it with Boot Nuker and start over again.

Besides, if it's XP or anything after it, it's already a good candidate for a Linux replacement regardless. ;o) But I can't recommend Mandrake any more, as they're apparently not suporting my distro any more. It's a Debian world now. If you have a few hours to spare, you should download at least these three ISOs (out of 31 total!) to get started:
ftp://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/archive/5.0.8/i386/iso-cd/debian-508-i386-CD-1.iso
ftp://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/archive/5.0.8/i386/iso-cd/debian-508-i386-CD-2.iso
ftp://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/archive/5.0.8/i386/iso-cd/debian-508-i386-CD-3.iso

Or if you just want to play around with it first ("get the feel" for it), there's a bootable "live CD" on
ftp://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/archive/5.0.8-live/i386/iso-cd/debian-live-508-i386-kde-desktop.iso
Record it to a disc, reboot and have at it!

I'd make reference to Debian 6, but I personally just don't think it's "there" yet.

Keep backups of your data and have them ready because you never know when your operating system or hard drive is going to bite the dust.

Or should I say "byte" the dust?

Bite the dust is a figure of speech that pertains to that which started out as shattered pieces of priceless art on the floor, but that was before the latest happy marathon couple danced in them and ground them to dust, which blew away to the four winds, never to be grasped.

On the day I finally get to meet her, she will not know who we are, but it will be a time of great excitement, and we will treat her to very interesting times indeed.

Very interesting times indeed have been had by everyone over the last 5 years and we can only wonder what lies in wait for us as we continue on and on for the next 5 years.

I just heard this collective gasp from the Radio-Info offices. :D

On and on for the next 5 years is a timeframe that is not guaranteed, but should we endure for another five years we will be a few years beyond those who fall by the wayside.

The wayside is full of those who have come and gone and couldn't stand the heat while we are the ones who conquered and stood.
