Though everyone calls the old "78's" shellac records, the main ingredient in them was "mineral filler," in plain English, powdered stone. They did actually contain shellac though, and "carbon black" to make them, uh, carbon black. Most people also call those cut-it-yourself blank records "acetates," but the surface lacquer of many of them is really nitrocellulose, the highly flammable stuff they made old-time movie film out of, so no smoking, OK?
