Ok, interesting thought here. Between Raleigh and Gboro, we have a few heritage stations with no direct competition in their format.

G105
K97.5
99.5 WMAG (Simon aside)
107.5 KZL
maybe even 96 Rock - RVA does well against them sometimes, but G is the only other that touches new rock

If you were a PD hired to take a station from scratch and take down one of these heritage giants - how would do you it? What weaknesses would you exploit and strengths would you take into account?

Great topic! I've always thought that KZL had a target on their back. At this point, KZL is hanging on by one thread whose name is Murhpy. That's all they've got. I remember KZL used to be one of the best programmed CHR's in the biz. It's a shame to see what they've become. It's only a matter of time before someone sees the target and charges.

How would I do it you ask? First you'd need another 100,000 watt stick. Bring something new to the market. Not Kiss (which I know is already being used), Q, K, Hot, Star... blah, blah, blah! Be original. I'd hire a young gun to host mornings with a female that every female in the audience can relate to. Get them out in the public and meet the people. Now, will they surpass Murphy in ratings? Probably not, but they could make a dent. And after all, when was the last time you saw Jack Murphy in public?

Mid-days and afternoons are flame-throwin' with emphasis on music and driven with lots of show prep and entertainment. Nights are next to mornings in my opinion on a CHR. Very similar to the morning show, however with a little more music. Get the audience talking about the station, the personalities. Create a buzz. Now I know what all you other posters are gonna say... "you're very vague with what you would do!" Am I? There may be a reason for that. Trust me, I know how to do it and could do it. Who's to say it's not in the works already? Wouldn't you like to know?

In my opinion, WKZL is the one to go after. They're making tons of money and they're ripe for the pickin'. Not that I don't think they're a decent station, but they're the station that needs a competitor. That's the current "hole" in the market. It IS getting harder and harder to capture the young audience....ipods, sattellite radio, etc., etc., etc. SO, it could be that that's not a market worth going after. BUT, that audience is also fickle as hell and will flock to something new to try it. WMAG has competition from both Simon and 94.1 Oldies. All three of those stations are going after the same market, so I wouldn't go there.

 What this market needs is a good Lawerence Welk and Accordian music station.... Where are ya Omar Hilton when we need ya!

I think the Program Director of a station or a "Cluster Of Stations" (big radio phrase term ;)) should involve people who actually listen to their station, or radio in general!. About ten years or so, I participated in a focus group for 1360-WCHL (in Chapel Hill). It took a couple of hours and it seemed they really cared about what we were saying. Although, a year later the station was sold, some of our ideas WERE actually used during that year. Use the people who buy the product.!

*on a personal note, if anyone is looking for a listener to join their staff in some capacity (except sales), I would be interested.

Thanks,
Stuart

If this is how Rush, Sean, and Bill O'Reilly started out, I will pay my dues ;)

I think if you're going after G you have to concede morning drive...unless you can pry Mike Wheeles away from QDR you're not going to find someone who can take down Showgram in a similar format.

As for 96 Rock, I think Clear Channel could do it if they flip 93.9 to Alternative or Active Rock and transition the River from Classic Hits to Classic Rock. It seems like they have found success with "everything that rocks," so the best strategy might be to come at them from two sides.

I think K97 is in pretty good shape. I don't really know what you could do to take them down. The African American audience has been pretty under served here, so those listeners have been loyal to that station for so many years.

This is a great question. If you were going to take on G, do what G used to do....be a local top 40 and stop sounding like a top 4o that is trying to sound like it's in LA. Make the jocks part of the community. It really doesn't take that long when every one on the staff is in on it. That is the hard part.

if you go against 107, put some slick talent on after Murphy and get them out in front of people. the jocks they have on might be fine, but you can't tell based on what they do on the air, which ain't much. Taking a call and really interacting with a caller are two different things and they make the difference in making a connection with your audience or making sounds.

The places that I would go against these stations are on the basics. I'd play the biggest hits often and take chances on new music often. I would challenge my talent every day and get them in front of their people every day. I would scare my competitors. I would smoke their asses. Good night.

thats because K97.5 has NO competition except WZFX and WJMH...(WRSV and WPWZ put signals into raleigh but they are programmed worse than K97.5)....both put poor signals into raleigh, but knowing people that work at both stations, they get calls all time from the triangle area saying how bad WQOK is......it won't take much to take them down..they are usually months behind on newer music, thier mixshows suck and their personalities are just as bad....minus their morning show which is satelite fed...the rest of the dayparts are just a pain to listen to.

I think if G105 were to go more urban leaning, without even getting any black airstaff..they would give WQOK a run for its money...and I would put money on that!

classic case.in richmond, urban WCDX 92.1 (owned by radio one) was dethroned by newcomer 106.5 the beat (a clearchannel station) in about 2 books....WCDX recently fired all airstaff and revamped itself to "ipower" 92.1....last time I checked...ipower is still struggling to get its listeners back...also one market away in hampton roads VA...at LEAST 4 urbans have tried and failed against clear channels WOWI...2 of them being on the same frequency at different time periods.

WQOK is ripe for the picking...come on clear channel...blow up kiss or the river..make it urban and have all demos covered in the triangle....

G 105 is more local than many CHR's in the country. From mornings to nights all of their talent is live...they live in the Raleigh area. Plus they have a local weekend staff too.

Living there and sounding like it are two different things. That's not what I'm saying. You have to live it. You can't pretend you're Ryan Seacrest in Raleigh talking about who the Jonas brothers are dating or who Britney backed into every break.

Obviously you can, they have been pretty consistent in the ratings book for ages. The last one was a bit of a drop, but that happens from time to time.

Thanks for the ratings update, Ryan. the topic here is how would you take out one of these stations. Not, "why I love the station I work at".

Sniff, don't be too hard on Ryan. G105 people live in a world of denial and myth. They think they are the top station in Arbitron. They are not. Outside of the showgram they rarely crack the top five or six in adult numbers. They think they are the top station in sales. Again they are not and haven't been since Clear Channel took them over. They think the do great promotions and are totally connected to their community. They aren't. They think it is 1998. It is not. It is ten years later and Ryan doesn't know that nobody cares. Don't tell him.
