Far-Away Stations Invading South Florida's Airwaves

THIS JUST IN:

Atmospheric / Meteorological conditions are nearly perfect aqui en El Sur de Florida starting today (Monday) through much of this week for far-away FM stations to invade our South Florida airwaves from the northwest. If anyone is bored while driving around the region then flip on over to other adjacent FM frequencies and see what stations you can identify that are from far-away. I'll report any findings myself.

Major, I just posted this a little while ago on the Tampa board - this weekend was unbelievable for DX'ing. In Clearwater, I picked up 93.7 The Arrow/Houston and Q-93/New Orleans as well as Diva 92.3/New Orleans. What have you picked up in your neck of the woods?

Yeah that sounds about right. The Tampa Bay area got in on the unique atmospheric conditions perfect for picking-up those far-away FM stations this past weekend. It took a couple of days for the southeast coast of Florida to get in on the action.

I have about a 15-minute drive to work each morning, so my goal tomorrow (Tuesday) morning at dusk is to explore the FM dial and see what I can come up with. If the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale stations are coming in weak with static then I know that the Tampa Bay stations are bleeding through. 93.3-FLZ and MIX-100.7 are frequent visitors into the Homestead area.

As several blasts of wintry (chilly) air (very high barometric pressure) invades the Florida peninsula from northwest to southeast this upcoming Thursday, Friday, and into this weekend the 'distant-listening' capability should hit a real nice peak. Coincidentally I'll be driving up north to Orlando and then over to Jacksonville early next week, so I'll have miles and miles of fun exploring the FM dial !

I live in hialeah, couple years ago during fall i picked up a few orlando stations 102 jamz ( 101.9 ) i dont even think they are rated at 100,000 watts but they came in pretty good and clear one afternoon

Also 96.5 wqht rock from orlando came in lightly when miami's power 96.5 went off the air. thats happend a few times over the years

933 wflz Tampa super strong, they allays come in for me during fall, even though im 5-7 miles away from the local transmitter of 93.1. You can make out FLZ 300+ miles away with some bleed in's from miami's 93.1

107.1 WAOA from Melbourne is another regular along with naples 107.1 country

B103.9 WXKB from Ft myers comes in from time to time

Well ( backwards now ) i once heard miami's y-100.7 in orlando in a rental chevy cavalier, that was bizzare!

the regulars are 95.5 and 102.3 out of west palm, everbody knows those stations

The DX'ing is actually pretty crappy in most of Palm Beach County. A really good DX'ing radio can pick up B103.9/Fort Myers fairly regularly. In addition, Star out of Orlando can be heard on a good car DX'er. Other than that, the only rare pick-ups I have had are the Eagle 107.3 out of Tampa (but I can reach them only from as far north as the Jupiter Lighthouse).

Well this morning's short drive to work and this afternoon's equally short drive from work turned out to be a total dud as far as FM radio 'DXing' is concerned.

I listened to 95.3-OLZ out of the Cape Coral area this morning. It's an oldies station. Morning show hosts McGee and Cathy Taylor were talking back-and-forth about Hollywood gossip, and then they played George McCrae's 1974 DISCO SMASH "Rock Your Baby". What a great song that is !

This afternoon I caught a glimpse of CLASSIC-ROCK-94.5 out of Fort Myers. Chaos was on.

I'll try for some real 'DXing' again tomorrow.
