Faraway FM Reception in Tampa

Yesterday afternoon, I picked up 94.5 The Fox/Panama City quite clearly on Dale Mabry (near Raymond James Stadium). Is this normal, or were there good skips over the Gulf yesterday? I've also noticed that several of the Ocala-area stations have very spotty reception in the Tampa Bay area. Many of them, such as WTRS, come in far more clearly in Clearwater than in Tampa or St. Petersburg.

Wow ! I'd say that would be VERY rare, usually if you pick up 94.5 in Tampa Bay, it's out of the Orlando area....Deltona to be exact.

From time to time you will hear 94.5 from the Ft Myers area trying to break through that.......

I've NEVER heard that station in Tampa !

I don't recall hering this one in Pinellas, however it's pretty common right along the central FL coast to get trunking or ducting to Pensacola/Panama City/Mobile, occasionally even as far as New Orleans. Always fun!

I noticed it this morning on my drive from Orlando to Tampa Bay and I caught a couple signals that never come in this far south

100.5 The Buzz / Gainesville-Ocala was so clear "Seek" stopped on 100.5. This is a very weak station.
Also heard:
Sky 97.3 Gainesville-Ocala
99.9 Gator-FM (now out of Jacksonville with lower power) clear in Tampa.

Seemed to be the northern stations blowing in.

I was actually hoping to pick up WABB/Mobile this weekend, but no luck. 97 Country in Lakeland takes over the 97.5 signal!

I was shocked to hear it as well. I was trying to DX some stations up in the Mobile area, as I mentioned in my other post, but I had no luck. Have any of you ever DX'd into Mobile from Tampa? If so, which stations have you heard?

I was in Destin for a weekend of fishing last year, and had gone to Walmart with my brother to get some last minute things. I waited in the car, and started playing with the radio. I tried WPSO (yes, I am Greek), and WWL (this was shortly after Katrina), and was able to pick up both in Destin. Although weak, WPSO is the one that supprised me. WWL you could listen to with some static, but not enough to bother me.

I used to routinely pull in WTVY 95.5 from Dothan Alabama, 101.9 from New Orleans, 104.1 from Houma La and 104.1 from Houston and 104.1 from Tallahassee from my home in Dunedin Fla.

I picked up 94.3FM a long time ago also. But back then they were still Pirate Radio 94.5.

Anytime Mr. Warm air mass meets Mr. Cold air mass you can look forward to some ducting... not skip in this case. Although I believe sporadic E skip is possible on VHF. Could be wrong on that one...

Over the weekend I was picking up a couple Ft. Myers stations crystal clear. I guess that's not as exciting as Alabama... but ducting is POSSIBLE up to 1000 miles over land, and something like 2000 over water. So, maybe I'll get something good next time.

Especially on Sunday, there just seemed to be a cold air mass of high pressure, not a merging of two air masses. That doesn't seem ripe for ducting or skipping. That is what makes these pick-ups even more interesting.

Funny thing FLZ and 98 Rock show up on the same setting on the dial. By noon everyone fades away.....like i wish LT would!!!

When I went to UF, 'FLZ was one of the clearest Tampa stations that could be heard from the dorms. As a matter of fact, I have a tape of Bubba's last night show on 'FLZ, which I taped back in 1996 in Gainesville. Gainesville and Ocaca, at times, are great for DX'ing, as often stations from Jacksonville and Tampa are within reach. For whatever reason, in the early fall each year, WAPE seemed to come in nicely in Gainesville, but then would fade greatly by the time winter rolled around....

And speaking of Ocala and Gainesville, Kiss 105.3 is still one of the better-sounding CHRs out there....

I was shocked to hear it as well. I was trying to DX some
stations up in the Mobile area, as I mentioned in my other
post, but I had no luck. Have any of you ever DX'd into
Mobile from Tampa? If so, which stations have you heard?

I'm a DXer that vacations on St. Pete Beach each January. I hear WDLT & WYOK regularly. Most of the other stations from that area are on the same freqs as Tampa-area stations. I've been at the condo so often, I know how to orient my portable's antenna to null the locals. I've even got WYCL once, around what was then WBBY (now WXGL). <P ID="signature">______________

I have tried getting WYOK for the past few days, but no luck. There is so much water in the Tampa area that location seems key to DX'ing. So far, Clearwater seems to be the best location for DX'ing for some reason.

We get tropo almost daily here in the Tampa area. In the morning the FM's from all over the state are usually in there. sometimes it's so good, we get southern alabama in. The real fun is in early summer when the E skip comes in and we get stations from middle america during the day. Best E skip I got was WRIF in Detroit last summer.
