Can someone explain why 99x & Q100 will go completely away if/when Susquehanna sells of it's radio stations?

I don't really understand how the sale of Susquehanna's radio stations means that their market 11 stations will shut down.

Seriously, I don't understand. (not being sarcastic).
______________

It doesn't, unless Cumulus thinks that 99X and Q100 are underperforming assets that could be more profitable in a different format. I think that's pretty unlikely, since both stations do pretty well in their target demo.

This surprises me a little. People from Susquehanna/Atlanta have told me they expected the group led by Susquehanna executives David Kennedy and Frank Brubaker to win out. That sounded logical since Susquehanna, as a privately-held company, is not required to sell to the highest bidder or whichever bidder would be best for the shareholders. And my impression was that Louis Appel is someone who'd be loyal to his longtime employees. I guess the Cumulus group is outbidding them but, hey, what's a few more million when you're talking about thousands of millions?

No one can. It's all just hope by a bunch of people who really hate these stations somehow. There have been numerous incidents where a company sells its stations and the formats come along for the ride.

We're market 10 now. ;)

Ahh...I thought that may have been the case. In other words, let's pray for the demise of dozens of peoples jobs because I don't like the station (even though I still listen). Gotcha. 10-4.

The stations won't go dark, brainiac. If you know anything about Cumulus (the most likely winning bidder), you will understand that their programming decisions never seem to take into account simple things like arbs, heritage (in 99X's case), and demo penetration. It's all about doing radio on the cheap. Most bang for the (shareholder's) buck.

99.7 & 100.5 shall continue to exist. I just predict their current incarnations will fade away, Dickey-style.

They won't - it's just wishful thinking by a bunch of people who hate Q & X. If Cumulus becomes the new owner of Susquehanna, they will analyze ALL markets (as any good business owner would), and after research - if they feel a different format would make more money for any station - they'll flip it.

R&R: Cumulus Media emerging as the winning bidder may be premature

Susquehanna Sale Decision Expected Soon

A source close to the negotiations tells R&R that an announcement on the buyer — or buyers — for Susquehanna Radio's stations will likely come "within a week or two," but cautioned that rumors of Cumulus Media emerging as the winning bidder may be premature.

The source noted that if the group led by current Susquehanna Radio COO David Kennedy could assemble funding for both the radio and cable assets, it would stand a solid chance of winning both. However, the source said that if Comcast wins the bidding for Susquehanna's cable division — which is a likely scenario — Kennedy's group would be at risk of being outbid on the radio group.

The source also noted that Susquehanna's radio group might be divided up among a few bidders since some clusters — such as Kansas City — would be attractive to many suitors.

Cumulus was named as the front-runner to buy the whole radio group in a New York Times article published today, but a Cumulus rep declined to comment when contacted by R&R. A call to Susquehanna wasn't immediately returned.

Entercom and Citadel have also been mentioned as active bidders for Susquehanna's radio assets, along with Bonneville, Cox, Greater Media and NextMedia. Emmis is also rumored to have made a late run at the assets, and there's talk that Clear Channel may be eyeing the Kansas City cluster since it's the only top-30 market, besides Puerto Rico, where the company doesn't currently operate.

Even though I doubt that 99X, or Q-100 will go away, or change much, if any because of the purchase. I think it would be nice to flip one of them to a Real AOR station. I've always found it hard to believe that the Atlanta market has always had only one AOR. Considering the potential audience.
______________

Ding ding ding! Cheers, G! You hit the nail on the head. No one in the upper echelon of the cloud people even *knows* what an Arbitron is, let alone demographics.

Cumulus should just be called Antithesis Broadcasting because their namesake does not reflect how they run radio stations.

Case in point, WZAT-FM here in Savannah. It was a heritage alternative station, Z102. Cumulus bought it in 1997, then flipped it to Top 40. After a few years of ratings success at Z102, Clear Channel flipped their struggling Hot AC WAEV-FM, Mix 97.3, to 97-3 KISS FM in December of 2001. WAEV has now dominated the ratings here in Savannah ever since.

After watching Z102 slowly sink deeper and deeper with each ratings book, what does Cumulus do? NOTHING! As I type this, Z102 is still around, not knowing if it's Hot AC or Top 40 (Norah Jones into 'Lil Jon or Ludacris can be disconcerting) and slowly slipping deeper into the bog of ratings oblivion.

I really hope Cumulus doesn't get these stations. 99X is a big part of Atlanta and it'd be a shame to see them acquired by a company who doesn't understand simple things like marketing, ratings, or keeping listeners.
Edited by FilmCritic3000 on 10/09/05 07:34 AM.

Say it isn't so! I hope these two stations don't go away. If we lose Q, it will be like the tortured 90's all over again where we were forced to listen to hot AC music on supposedly top 40 Star 94. I like Star 94, but I don't want to be deprived of my mainstream top 40 music. Having a choice between stations is nice right now.
