farewell D-FW.. farewell

The time has come for us to say goodbye to our friend, our fellow P-1, and our sometime nemesis, Pittsburgh Dave. Born to the lore of Sportsradio 1310 The Ticket in the summer of 1994 and now taken from this earth on March 30th, 2008. It is a time to reflect on the heady days of the subculture. The first Hooters remote (200 wings at our table and a $100 tip.) The first Ticket Laker(RIP R.O., keep jammin’.,) The moon-shot from “Naked in Bed” at the Dallas Boat Show. And, let us not forget, the quest of my certification from Mr. Rhyner. Running up my phone bill by calling the now late, great Buddy Dial to find out about his pop hit here in Dallas and to make sure Mike knew who Bobby Ply was before he grilled me. Ticketstock ’96 which started the acrimony when my beloved Steelers were in Phoenix against Dallas in Super Bowl XXX(Curse you Larry Brown.)

I cannot count how many times I was cut off from the air on the Hardline and though Mike and I had our differences, I have been a staunch supporter of 1310, even while I worked down the dial at 103.3 ESPN. I feel fortunate that I have been able to live in the glory now of a Super Bowl(God Bless Big Ben, ) and I now turn the mantle over in Dred Pirate Roberts fashion to someone else.

The time has come for me to take my leave of the Metroplex. I will return to my homeland of the Root-Hog and immerse myself into the world of computers. Radio, as many of you know, is now a barren wasteland to the corporate kiss-ass and soul-less. I will look fondly on my time here in Dallas. I thank UNT for my degree, I thank ESPN and USA for my time in radio, I thank American Singles.com for my lovely wife, but I thank The Ticket for my vernacular. “Fax Fodder”, “Situation”, “Greatness”, “Trifecta”, “Mark”, and way, WAY too many drops to mention(thank you Expo and Grubes.)

I give a fond farewell to all at 1310, George and Craig, Mike, Corby, Jeff, Mark, Coop, Chris, Elf, Studar and even our friend who cannot be mentioned. You have all given me many laughs(Mark Followill cheering death, and the infamous “screw call”) and many thoughtful moments, (Johnny U. on with the Hardline, the call with the crew raising the bell of the Edmund Fitzgerald.) And even I had to stop and think about some of the things I was doing after Mr. Williams bared his soul after his return from drydock.

It has been a great fifteen years, but as I’m sure someone had said, “It’s time to pay for the soup.” David Lowe will live on, but Pittsburgh Dave was stabbed in the back by some faceless Steelers intern and his ashes have been spread over Heinz Field and the “Dirty O” in the Steel City.
Thanks for listening,
Pittsburgh Dave
