Farewell Ike

Heard through the grapevine that today was Ike Newkirk's last day at Capital City Plaza. First Tripp West and now this news. Looks like the budget ax is swingin' at LFM.

That is sad to hear. Hopefully he got a good package after 40 or so years there.

I do want to say that Ike would be a perfect fit for a 7-midnight talk show on WAMJ (102.5). Currently the station has syndicated talk until 7PM and then goes to music. A local talk show with an icon like Ike Newkirk would work great, just as WSB-AM shifts to local talk in the evening.

If I were Ike, my first call would be to Tim Davies at Radio One.

I think the idea is to make sure everyone is thrown out of the building who remembers how radio was done when it worked, when it was profitable, and when it was entertaining. That way, stupid decisions can go forth ad infinitum unchallenged by anyone from within. Anyone who's left...play dumb!

Timely words from the top Clear Channel Consultant - Atlanta Market. You just can't mess with success.

Ike is a webmaster? That's interesting. I used to listen to him and just shake my head in amazement at the loony calls, but last weekend I listened to him for almost an hour and actually agreed with much of what he was saying. I dunno, I also had a fever at the time. I'll miss his show. Dissent is good radio.

My early nominee for "Post of the Year."

I am familiar with that scenario. Too bad it's been played out repeatedly in market after market.

What did Ike do beside the Sunday morning show.

Public service director of Star 94 and 790 The Zone. He also was Star's webmaster.

Almost true, those duties we're taken away from Ike in '07
That was part of the problem. His only responsibility was
his Sunday show. Once again,Star showed one of their most talented
people the door with out decency. It was sad to see.
There is a closeted management there, that has continued to make
decisions that ruined a once admired station in the country and has
most employee's filling out applications for almost any job they can get

I cant agree any better...

I believe that Ike's show started back around 1975. Until around 2005, he ran on WQXI and WSTR from 6:00 am to 7:00 am and continued until 9:00 am on WQXI. Then he was taken off WSTR and the hours on WQXI were changed to 5:00 am to 8:00 am. I was listening to him one Sunday morning when the listeners were complaining about him being taken off the FM. He hinted that he was being censored because management had different political views from his. I believe they have been trying to dump him for several years now.

Shit, Ike helped me out when I had just gotten out of the Navy in 1971. He actually let me fill in for him on his sunday show at wqxi. He was a great guy and never had anything bad to say about anybody. He always was there for me and taught me a lot about the business. He had a great 40 years which is more than I can say about most of the people I worked with.
