Farewell to Fly 104.9

Fly 104.9, one of the earlier Top 40 internet radio stations on the Internet announced during the Night show that they would be ceasing operations on 12.31.08, but not without a final recap show.

When asked why, they cited a huge loss financially with partially in fact due to increasing royalty payments, staff salaries and a declining advertising climate with the nation being in a recession.

I'll miss it, this is how I discovered Internet Radio :(

Fly 104.9 is coming to an end, and we're paying respects to the best top 40 radio station in Beekman and on the internet. Fly 104.9 has become known world-wide as the #1 station for Top 40 and the newest cuts.

However Wednesday is going to be a complete tribute to Fly 104.9, with archived shows playing all day long...

I agree it is tough to have an Internet Radio Station make money, let alone break even. We've been running STAR 107.9 off of volunteer effort and just recently (this year) found some local businesses that are willing to sponsor some hours on the station. Well, back in the summer, they had a very active listener base, and an active list of sponsors, commercials. But they paid all their DJ's salary, and had a lush office [that's another story] (visited in person). Their DJ's are top notch, they always have new music, and is imho, one of the better internet radio stations.
 
I always admired the new music they always played. When something new came out, literally that day, or even in some cases a week before it hit other stations they had it first. That's in my mind, one of the better qualities of Fly
 
Fly 104.9 is now part of Zeus Broadcasting Group. I could not see letting a great internet station die. Matt is a good guy and we (Zeus) will do everything to help him take Fly 104.9 to the next level.
 
You guys are both soooo Awesome.. Im just now Discovering Fly 104.9,,, but im very happy that I was made aware of it,,,This is much better than all the other internet only CHR stations ive found... Im glad you guys all worked something out,, and although ive never spoken to you guys before, I am going to spread the word of Fly 104.9 and Zeus radio is well... You guys are awesome....

Looks really good. I'm so glad to hear its back, Ive missed my fly. Hopefully its up soon!
 
Well, the second hour of being on air has been a success. We're just waiting until the morning to edit the iTunes Radio listing.

Don't forget that Phil is not only the programmer of the great music, but also writes the custom automation system that this station and a few special others use as well.

I guess the automation software is what makes the station sound so good?
