Farewell, WKLD

Today, Friday, is supposed to be the last day of 97.7 WKLD (as Oneonta's station).

I still can remember the first time I heard them, It was back in 1999 or 2000, and WKGL in the Shoals was still on air. I heard KGL 95% of the time, but I was so excited when I found out that Oneonta had a radio station. Then, KGL left the air, and I started to listen to K-Country all the time. After WFMH left in 2005, WKLD became my favorite station.

As of 11:20 PM, WKLD is still on air, playing "Timeless Favorites," and airing WCRL 1570 liners. Ironically, WKLD just aired Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young's "Just a song before I go." As soon as I hear dead air, I will be sure to post my findings.

It's 12:09 AM, and WKLD is gone :'( :'( :'( :'(

Their Last song was "When Will I See You Again," by Three Degree.

Wayne Shaddix Gave an ID, the current weather, and Announced that WKLD was leaving the airwaves. Terri Bentley Lowry Also came on air, and said Good Bye, then after a few more sentences, everything got quiet and went to static. I called WKLD and I'll be darned if during the middle of the conversation my call was dropped. Now, I sit here listening to a a very static-ish 97.7 WKXM.

Sorry to hear that WKLD is no more, at least in Oneonta. When I was growing up, I lived up on Shades Mountain, just south of Birmingham, and we were about halfway between the xmtrs for WKLD and WEZZ (now WHPH) in Clanton, although we were probably slightly closer to WKLD. I can remember being able to hear both those stations on different radios/receivers in our house. Some of them picked up just WEZZ while others were only able to receive WKLD. We did have one small portable GE radio, though, which would receive both of them at the same time. I could hear WEZZ primarily, but WKLD could be heard underneath the WEZZ audio. I live in south Shelby county now, so I hear WHPH all the time now. BTW, I know that area well where WKLD is relocating their xmtr, as my grandmother used to live near there. She actually lived in Oleander but had a Union Grove mailing address. That new xmtr location for WKLD is within "spitting distance" of her property there, probably less than half a mile.

I figured Great South Wireless might pair WKLD and WHPH together once they bought them and use them to cover both parts of Birmingham (WKLD from the north and WHPH from the south). WHPH has a CP to upgrade to a C3 status and move their xmtr a few miles to the northwest from where they are now. Looking at the coverage maps, it doesn't appear the station will significantly improve its coverage in Birmingham (I'm already under the city-grade signal now, so I won't really notice any difference here). I guess Great South Wireless feels it would be more advantageous to market the stations to Birmingham and Huntsville, respectively, instead of combining the two operations here. Once WKLD moves closer to Huntsville, I'm sure it will be "just another" Huntsville station with no type of local aim at its actual COL, Union Grove. I know WHPH has pretty much given up on its identity as a Clanton station. There's seldom any mention of Clanton anymore since the station moved their xmtr further north and changed their COL to Jemison. Their lack of focus on Clanton is particularly noticeable in the station ID, which very seldom mentions Clanton, but usually lists one or more Birmingham "suburbs" in Shelby County (Calera, Montevallo, Columbiana, etc). They're still trying to re-invent themselves as sort of a "southern Birmingham suburb station" and it's unfortunate the station has lost (or given up, however you want to look at it) its Clanton ties, particularly in light of the fact that most people in the areas WHPH is trying to identify with have probably never heard of "The Peach". I'm sure WKLD will undergo a similar metamorphosis, touting themselves to be a Huntsville station and only mentioning Union Grove in the station's ID which they're required to do. It's sad to see all the small local FM's get swallowed up into the larger metropolitan areas, but it's inevitable, I suppose. :(

So what happens to WKLD now? Does it just stay silent for a while until its re-emergence in Huntsville?

Radio Didn't Exist?

They're gone as of this morning. I thought I would be able to get Winfield on 97.7, but a Way-FM translator on 98.1 about a half mile from me wipes it out. Sad to see another small town station leave for the big city.

About 4 Years ago, there were 4 97.7's around Birmingham. There was Z97 WEZZ, a Country station in Clanton that barely reached the southern suberbs. Second, was WQJJ 97.7 The Fox, a LP Classic Rock station in Jasper that did not reach BHM. Third, was WKXM 97.7 in Winfield. They were affiliated with ABC's "Oldies Radio." They didn't reach BHM either. Fourth was WKLD 97.7 in Oneonta. They Were affiliated with ABC's "Best Country Around," and even would make it into the ratings with their 3000 watt transmitter.

Today, the only one that hasn't been shut off(WQJJ) or moved (WHPH/WKLD) is 97.7 WKXM.

Maybe I should contact Great South and let them know that there is one more 97.7 they can get their hands on :D :D

Wow sad news, Did they get sold and move or did they just go dark ?

They were sold for a million to Great South Wireless. Moving it to Union Grove to serve the Huntsville market.

WHPH has already Increased their power (at least I think they have). I was tuned in to WKXM a couple hours ago and they started fading out. Three Dog Night's "Old Fashioned Love Song" was playing, then I heard the liner that reads "The Superhits of the 60's and 70's..97.7 The Peach."

Anyone have any Ideas on what the new format for WKLD will be? ???

Travis

And... when the new station will sign-on in the Huntsville market?

Thanks for letting me know about WQJJ. When Big South Community broadcasting put WJBE 88.5 on air and bought WJLX 1240, they had WQJJ off. I thought it was still off.

Travis

As Far As I know, WKXM doesn't have any stream or website. They are affiliated with ABC's Classic Hits Radio. It sounds decent. Their morning show and commercials have one of those deep radio sounding voices. It is still one of those small town radio stations...for now.

BTW, I found out some more info on WKLD. Their new studios will be in Huntsville, and will return to the airwaves in May or June.

Let's have some format predictions. I'll start the ball rolling by saying CHR, or maybe classic hits.

Judging that most of Great South's stations are either Country(WKGA) or Oldies(WHPH) I say it will be either 60's and 70's Oldies since there hasn't been FM Oldies since Cool 92/94 left. Or, They might want to find a niche position as Classic Country to compete with WQAH 105.7, which does well to only have a 6kw torch 40 miles away. They may try to compete by sticking with late 60's to early 90's Country to grab those who think WDRM is too much New Country and those that think WQAH is "too old", say people 30-55. Possibly add some of the modern legendary artists such as Alan Jackson and George Strait, but not the hollywood artists like Keith Urban or Taylor Swift.

Also, they would need to forget the scripts and bring in people that love the music and can connect with it. Have an all request program and have fun with it. Most importantly, target the businesses and services that listeners would actually relate to and do transactions with. In other words, if you target Men 25-60, don't try to push Bed, Bath, and beyond. Also, be realistic. With a 950 watt signal it is unlikely that it is going to be #1 against 100KW blowtorches, set goals that are feasable.

To be honest, This is an educated guess. If I am wrong, It's because I do not have a job in Commercial Broadcasting...... Unless anyone has a job opening in radio ;)

The translator was airing AFN or Way-FM at one time. I never get to Huntsville, so I don't know if it's on now or not. Anyway, It will soon be history if it is on. Also, I read that WCRL is trying to get a translator in Oneonta to put that signal on FM.

Zach,

The quote about WQJJ that you had was from page 1. I had thought WQJJ was still off air because they was when WJBE went on air in Jasper. I thought they were owned by the same company. Board member KillerWatts100 posted that WQJJ was in fact back on air.

ALRocker, speaking of WCRL, I talked to Wayne Shaddix a couple months ago and said that they were trying to get a translator on 95.3. Then, last Friday when they signed off, he said that "in about three weeks we'll be back on air on 95.3." They may have some problems though, because 95.5 WHMA in Anniston has a CP to move to 95.3.

Truly the end of an era, that's my hometown, and I listened to it quite a bit back in the day. Anybody know what ever happened to Phil Williams?

Far as I can tell, no they haven't. I live at the southern fringe of their coverage area. Most days, I can barely get them. Some days, I can get them pretty well.

Once they do up their power, will that improve the signal over North and East Dallas County? Inquiring minds want to know.

I met WHPH engineer last Saturday. I was going home and drove by there transmitter site at about 2am, saw the lights on and decided to stop and say hello. He said they had not increased there power yet. He would not say a lot about there power increase except to say they were working on it. As of January 10 they were still broadcasting from the same site they have used for the last few years. He did say they were running 3.5kw into a 2 bay antenna since they started transmitting from this location in 2004 or 2005.
