Fate of WFMX-Cool Springs Tower Site

What might be the fate of the WFMX tower site in Cool Springs near the Davie-Iredell line? I would guess the site has other tenants? This tower is another sad casualty in the WFMX move. One of the best FM signals in inland NC and it will be killed with the move. Clear Channel

Last I heard, they were selling it.

I agree with you 100%! One of the best signals in the North Carolina!

I say we cut up the huge 1500 ft tower and pile it into the ground in the doorways of the FCC headqtrs in Wash.

I am so sick of the FCC as it has killed a great local provider and a monster station. Where is the serving local communities thought any longer?
Now the FCC is just in bed with the large corp owners.

Just like other gov't agencies, we would be so much better off with less of them.... :'(

Lets hope that the tower site can be utilzed by another FM station as it can give great coverage.

Great signal at 100k from 457m, but it's not likely anyone else will get a CP for 100k at 457m at that site. Also the focus these days is on covering 95-100% of the main urbanized area (UA) in the market, not small towns along the edge. Spacing is so tight, I don't think you'll see another C at that site. If you're a radio listener and live in Winston-Salem or the suburb of Clemmons, it won't feel like a move-in at all. In fact the signal may not be as strong in Clemmons after the move?

I have this fantasy of seeing the ticked off die-hard redneck racing fans going to Cool Springs and re-creating the last episode of "Little House on the Prairie" ;D

Only if you would play Melissa Sue Anderson ....

Well,

Sadly, they are going to put it in Clemmons,NC instead of Cool Springs, and with the format change...rumor has it, they will have no more NASCAR, as their sister station WTQR will have it...since they are going to be in the same building as them....

It is sad...but on a good note, they will be staying 105.7 WFMX,

dude, you need to check FCC again. They have a construction permit to move transmitter and all to Stokes County

To carlosswicegood:

I, Opie Joe worked there for 7 great years. I started board-oping and worked my way up to a successful morning show with Keith Todd. I have to tell you, working there was GREAT! As I said in an earlier post, we were all family. We went through everything together and SOOOOOO many listeners than what Arbitron recorded in the metros. I have to mention very LOYAL listeners as well, as indicated by these threads.

Best years of my broadcasting career being a part of WFMX and helping to program music, imaging, and what not. It was truly great. I wish you could have been a part of it!!! Good luck in your broadcasting career! :)

Wow. Impressive. I'm jealous. ;D

...and thanks, I have have another 3 years left in college, but it'll be worth it! My niece works for a local country station up here near the VA/NC boarder, I'm hoping to try it out there one day. 'Till then, I'm content just surfing the FM dial 8)

Don't let Opie fool you. The real success of his career was all based on the Saturday Night show. What can I say, he had a fantastic producer, and we use the term producer very loosely.

Speaking of which, I think I still have a complete backup of the production computer somewhere around here. I bet I have a ton of old liners and bits we put together....hmmmmm I'll have to look into that

Opie,

Good To see you on here....email me someday at [email protected] I havea few things I wanna tell you....and to carlos, WFMX and WSIC was great as Opie said...even though I was only there 6 months, I made a lot of friends including Opie, Keith, Billy, Trisha, and Dave, even Greg Ryan....it is a shame they moved and if you check their site, they have none of the same DJ's that they had when they were FMX, they now have Steve Harvey as a morning show in August, and they even have a new PD....it is a shame, some of the guys I know from there including the great Tim Sherrill he was there almost what Opie 25 years, and he is staying with WSIC which is good....but Mark Rose, he is no longer there unless he stayed and I don't know it....and he was there almost 23 years....and KR McKay is leaving WSIC which is a shame.....oh well people do move on and I guess he was ready to move on.....

Everyone have a good evening and early morning,

OK, you caught me! My real success came from the ever popular Saturday night show!!! Those were certainly good times! I guess you could say I had a good producer.

My lord, Walken and I cut our teeth on the Saturday night show. Looking back now, I think most of what we did was CRAZY, but fun. Every now and then, we'd come upon something good. Believe it or not, people listened. We were the only LIVE show on Saturday night that people could call. Charlotte and Greensboro were voicetracked.

Walken, check on that back-up!! I'd love to have some of that stuff in my files. BTW, I got your e-mail!

OJ

Alan,

Is that you posing as Walken, if os good to see you on here....lol...you are right though, Opie had a good producer LOL LMAO....the show was crazy, and funny...i tuned in every weekend.....but hey, it was good, and it shoulda stayed around...i dont know why Greg or Dave cut it....oh well...

Wayne Owens

Wayne,

Please stop posting things that are factually incorrect. It is Walken, and did you even listen when I was doing Saturday nights back what was I think 2000? That was WAY before you even got there!

Now I'm confused... on the air they still say WFMX, but everywhere else--- including on the streaming player when you launch it from the 105.7 KISS-FM website--- it says WMKS-FM. ???

WFMX / WMKS ?

They are probably just waiting for the paperwork to roll through the FCC to get the WMKS calls on 105.7. WFMX will more than likely pop up on a Clear Channel "Mix" station.
