Fatman on Warren

Fatman,
I saw your post reply on the sad state of radio at RNO.
You reminded me of the great nights on radio with Warren ("some mighty tasteful stuff"). He was the ultimate overnight voice. Nowadays it's all automated.
I know he did a short stint at Metroscan under another name (you cannot disguise that voice).
Whatever became of him? No one seems to know.
If the corporate gods ever decide to sell, a bunch of the old rockers posting here ought to buy it and truly bring back "The Rock of New Orleans", with Warren overnight, of course.

Warren was the morning board-op on WSMB for several years when they were running syndicated programming. He was WSMB's voice guy for about a minute when they were "The Game" (sportstalk format). He quit a few years ago when they flipped from sports back to their old talk format with Dr. Laura and all that. Entercom started a live local show in morning drive at that time and that's when Warren bailed - it wasn't worth the money to him to deal with that craziness. He told me at that time that he was probably done with radio altogether. "I can make more money deliverin' newspapers," he said.

When did you hear him with Metroscan? Was it recently?

I never got to hear Warren in his heyday on WRNO but is a really awesome guy and he knows his rock 'n roll; I have no doubt that he was great to listen to.

I have no idea where he is. I haven't heard from him in several years. He's one of those guys who will suddenly call and say "Dude! I just found your phone number in a pile of papers and wondered if you were still around!" We'll chat for awhile, make plans to get together and for some reason it never happens. Then 3 years later the phone will ring and "Dude!"

I hear that he was having major problems with the house he was living in and that he may have moved but I'm sure he's still in the NO metro. Bill Yeager at MetroScan hears from him occasionally.

You're right, if anyone ever has the balls to remake WRNO in it's old image he has to be there for overnights. I love the guy!

Agreed. He is another talented individual that deserves to be on the air in South Louisiana.

I believe Clear Channel has already read that note. It's extremely disheartening to see what has become of the true legendary southern rock stations like WRNO-New Orleans, KEGL-Dallas, and KLOL-Houston. You guys are fortunate to have "The Rock of New Orleans" still around, even if it is a shell of it's former self. We in Houston, as well as the good people of Dallas had our heritage flushed right down the friggin' toilet by those bastards.

I have to agree with smashedcd... those corporate (BLEEP) have destroyed radio as we know it. And it's true, since 1996 radio has been horrible. I used to work for B-97 as just a mere part-timer. It too, is not what it used to be since about '95 or '96. I grew up in the 80's and the B was my station.

I feel I'm lucky to have been able to work with the people I did like Buddy D, Michael Allen, Pal Al, and quite a few others for the years I did. Pal tought me a lot about radio, how he did things in his days at 'TIX, 'CKW, etc... When we talked about all this, Bob Walker always somehow came up in it!) He, too is awesome at what he does IMO.

I ALWAYS told Pal he deserved a PD position because he truely knows music and he knows the heritage behind these stations we grew to love here in this city. Hearing him do that one stint on B-97 when we did that Children's Hospital fund raiser thing was a trip! It was like hearing Paul Donovan (Bubba Carson), Allen Bebee, or 'dem others in its hay-day.

We took it all for granted when we had it, thinking it would never go away. Little did we know radio would be changing majorly at the end of the 80's.... Something to ponder....

BOYCOTT THOSE CORPORATIONS! HIT 'DEM BASTARDS WHERE IT HURTS! Don't support them; listen to cd's.

I spoke with the great Bebee just last week. He's doing well at Magic 93.7 on the MS coast. He lost his house like a bunch of us here in the Katrina zone but he sounded good on the air and on the phone. I was at B-97 in '88 with him, Cajun Ken the second time around, Cammie McCormack with news (great to hear her on CBS), Boomer and a bunch of other good folks. Well, some were jerks but such is life. Shadow P. Stevens was the PD then.

Quick funny story... when B-97 moved across the hall in Poydras Plaza from the old digs to the new place I was on the overnight shift. Shadow asked me to hang around with Cajun Ken for his first day on the new board to help out if he needed. The restrooms were right next to each other and unlabeled that morning. Cammie tells us upon returning from the john that she accidentally went into the wrong one. We made fun of her on the air about the bidets hanging on the wall not having any pressure. As I recall she didn't find it funny.

Ah yes...Album Hour at midnight (oh, and yes, it WAS a real album, with Side 1 and Side 2) :)

I know many people who thought Warren's last name was "Withya". LOL!

Thanks for jostling the old memory.

Don,
You brought up some old memories with mentioning those names from B-97. I think they were the first radio station I ever tuned to and I immediately fell in love with them. That was until I turned the dial a little further to the right and discovered RNO.
There was a character named Jane from Kenner that used to call in to Cajun Ken with stories about her life, husband and kids. She eventually was our junior high Sunday school teacher-- Jane Phillpot, I think she was in sales. I've keep in touch with her throughout the years. Last I heard she was with Entercom after leaving Clear Channel. Remember the short lived, live call in TV show that B-97 had on Cox cable? I think it was either Cajun Ken or Boomer that was the host.
I will never forget the night that Boomer teased everyone for about four hours about having discovered a backward message on a Madonna record. After waiting to hear it, it sounded like crap when played backwards. Supposedly, it was hidden in "Like a Virgin". I never could make out what it was supposed to say.
What ever happened to good radio like that?

I can tell ya what happened to radio like that... or radio in general for that matter. Corporations took over and it got sucked into a hole full of CONsultants, phoney PD's, and others who have no business being there.

Anybody remember Warren's last name? It was "Witcha" because every time he began to back-announce all twenty songs he just played, he'd say "It's Warren WITCHA!"

His last name is Montet. Pronounced MON-tae.
