Fav. CHR/Pop station at the moment?

Fav. CHR/Pop station at the moment?

The CHR/Pop format seems to be heating back up a bit recently and with summer coming on, it is shaping up to be a good year. I just thought it would be interesting to see which stations people are listening to (and streaming), and what everyone's current favorite is.

Personally, at the moment, I would have to say my favorite CHR/Pop station that I stream almost daily is KKOB "93-3 KOB FM" Albuquerque (www.kobfm.com). This station really stands out to me as sounding different and really fun. The music is a great mainstream mix (leaning a bit adult), and the production is really top notch. I love the "unique" sound of the station. They have several elements that make them stand out to me; I like the moniker "Albuquerque's Pop Music Channel", which is different. Also, for sweepers, they use Pat Garrett, who normally does more rhythmic stations. His deep voice is a welcome change from all of the cookie cutter, filtered type, boring sweepers most CHR's use now. Also, they do cool pre-recorded drops after each song with a female voiceover telling the artist and name of the song with a cute little "pop" sound effect (ala the old "Pop up Video" show on VH1). And they have a great jingle package too (sounds like one of the Z100 packages).

Anyway, personally, KKOB is my current fav. mainstream CHR, basically because they sound really fresh, unique, and highly produced. Anybody else have an opinion about them, and what is everyone else's current favorite Top 40 station?

Re: Fav. CHR/Pop station at the moment?

1) 96.3 The Rose Cape Cod MA.
2) Fun 107 ( 107.1) Fairheaven, New Bedford, Fall River MA.

Re: Fav. CHR/Pop station at the moment?

A local Hot AC station in my area does the song tag thing after each song. I personally find it highly irritating, but whatever works for them.

Favorites stations right now (this list never really changes much):
989 Kiss-FM Louisville, musically anyway, they are my first choice at the moment.

Others on the list:
Kiss 95.1 Charlotte
1075 KZL Winston-Salem (good adult leaner)
K92 Roanoke (good balance, slightly adult)
RadioNow 100.9 Indy (great balance, slightly Rythmic)
103.7 Kiss-FM Milwaukee (great balance, great imaging and presentation)
1061 Kiss-FM Seattle (even though the ratings arent as good as they used to be, I still think they sound top notch!)
98 PXY Rochester is looking better lately, I'll have to stream them
1023 Kiss-FM Albany
and of course, WNCI 97.9 Columbus

Re: Fav. CHR/Pop station at the moment?

gotta love that Q92, too!

I agree. 93.3 KOB is a favorite of mine.

106.1 Kiss FM in Dallas is up there too.

Re: Fav. CHR/Pop station at the moment?

Z 100, New York is my favorite
Also just discovered that Capital 95.8 in London has started streaming again. That's that a CHR should be IMHO.

Re: Fav. CHR/Pop station at the moment?

Capital 95.8 has always streamed. Where did you get the info that they stopped? ???

Go to the UK message board and you'll see. They did not stop, but the stream was not available outside of the UK. This happened about 2 years ago, maybe, but is now available again.

Re: Fav. CHR/Pop station at the moment?

Well, it was officially only available to UK listeners, but there are ways around. You could go for the direct link either via my list of European CHR/Pop webcasters or through a website that lists all the UK streaming stations

Either way, they are up and running again from the main site with internation access apparently. And, the sound quality is fantastic.

Re: Fav. CHR/Pop station at the moment?

Here are some of my FAV stations, Im only listing those in the U.S, because if I included Europe, Latin America, Africa ECT, my list would be about 3 pages.

Anyway.

Z-100 NYC.... Its a legend, gotta love it.

93.3 FLZ..... Great station in the past as The Power Pig,,,,, Still a great station today.

100.9 WNOU (RADIO NOW)...... Best Radio One station ever, aquired from Emmis of course, and one of my local stations, Very new music intensive, Leans slightly Rhythmic.

B 97,, WBWB...... Another one of my locals, Very Dance Friendly CHR......

Z Rock 107.5....... Rock Leaning, yet still plays the biggest Pop and Hip Hop hits.. Cutting edge unique formula

Q-100 Atlanta..... Excellent station, and now 100kw on the same Freq as the old Power 99, makes them that much cooler.

Z102.9 Cedar Rapids....... Good Rock leaning Chr...

Alice 107.7 Little Rock...... Modern Rock leaning CHR, and much better than the other Alice Hot AC counterparts.

WIXX 101..... Good Rock leaning station, always playing a few surprises as well.

B-93.7 Asheville-Greenville-Spartanburg........ Just listen online sometime, its the spitting image of the former Power 93.3 WBBO....... 93.7 picked up the format in 94 when 93.3 first went country.. and later Active Rock.

Star 102.1 Knoxville--- A bit conservative, but it sounds exactly how a CHR in Knoxville should sound, good jocks...

Electric 94.9...... Rhythmic Friendly in a conservative Nascar Town,,, Yet will throw in some occassional 80s and 90s hits,,,,,,,,Not to an extreme,,, just enough to give you a few surprises.... Wish they Streamed...

Mix 97.7 Myrtle Beach... Very popular station in the area, and it always smokes the Cumulous HOT 100 in the area.

B 92 Charleston.... Good station,,,,, What a flame thrower signal.....

Re: Fav. CHR/Pop station at the moment?

Capital 95.8 always streamed but there was a period of time it prompted you to provide a UK postal code in order to access the stream. That was easy. All I had to do was look at my recent receipt from the hotel I stayed in at Heathrow.

Currently, you no longer have to provide the postal code.

There is one station that I really like that I cannot access since I have a United States ISP. And that is FM 98.7 in Singapore.

As far as my favorites. Z-100 NYC, Kiss 96.5 Cleveland, KYLD-San Francisco (well this maybe more Rhythmic than CHR), Fly 92 Albany.

If I include international favorites, Capital 95.8, BBC Radio 1, CKOI-Montreal, Voltage-France, Radio DJ-Italy, and that one from Singapore that I mentioned above.

Re: Fav. CHR/Pop station at the moment?

Speaking of "Capital 95.8" London; it was funny when they were requiring a postal code to listen. Apparently they wanted to make it easy for people to break the rule and listen anyway since the page with the listen link and "uk only warning" had the station's address (along with postal code) directly under the link. All you had to do was simply type in Capital's own postal code and it worked fine. Kinda funny I thought.

Anyway, some other favorite CHR's of mine that haven't been mentioned would include;

- WSSX "95 SX" Charleston, SC
- KKPN "Planet 102.3" Corpus Christi, TX
- WVYB "103-3 The Vibe" Daytona Beach, FL
- WXYK "107-1 The Monkey" Biloxi-Gulfport, MS
- WDOD "96-5 The Mountain" Chattanooga, TN
- WWKL "Hot 92" Harrisburg, PA
- KWTX "97.5 FM" Waco, TX

In my own area (East TN.) I can pick up four mainstream CHR's: - WWST "Star 102.1" Knoxville, WDOD "96-5 The Mountain" Chattanooga, WAEZ "Electric 94-9" Tri-Cities, TN/VA, and WKXD "Kicks 106-9" Cookeville, TN. And out of those, I'd have to say that recent CHR convert, WDOD "96-5 the Mountain" has became my favorite. They aren't as adult leaning as WWST and they seem more loose and less structured than a lot of the cookie cutter stations owned by the big corporations. (They are owned by Bahakel, a smaller radio chain). Too bad they aren't streaming yet though. Anyway, hopefully they will have a good first book as a CHR and will stick with it. I've sure enjoyed them this past month.

Re: Fav. CHR/Pop station at the moment?

Hey Chrles, thanks so much for the link to Singapore's FM 98.7. I'm listening to it right now.

Now, the next thing that I wish for was that I was listening to 98.7 on the beach on Sentosa Island, instead of my office in Manhattan:)

Thanks again!

I would not consider Electric 94.9 to be rhythmic friendly. The only difference betwen them and Star 102.1 is that Electric doesn't ignore the rhythmic hits on the mainstream chart like Star does.

Re: Fav. CHR/Pop station at the moment?

Well, its pretty rhythmic friendly considering it comes from a very conservative market. Maybe not alot of Rap music, but plenty of Rhythmic pop and R&B. Keep in mind that Electric comes from the Bristol, Kingsport, Ti cities market, a nascar town, and a town which had banned MTV from its cable line up years back. Electric even plays some Dance music sometime's, like Alice Deejay-better off alone, and Sonique-Feel's so good.

Re: Fav. CHR/Pop station at the moment?

I think Electric 94.9 is just a great CHR. It doesn't kean Rhythmic - it just plays all the hits.
Additionally, the Tri Cities has a Rhythmic CHR in Jammin 92.3 and 103.9. The signal is nowhere nearly as strong as Electric's, and doesn't really cover Bristol, but it can be heard loud and clear in Johnson City, and okay in Kingsport

Re: Fav. CHR/Pop station at the moment?

Z-100 (NY and Portland), KDWB, Y-100, and Kiss FM Dallas would be my top five. For smaller markets I really like the balance of 98.9 Magic FM and 933 FLZ. Radio Now is my favorite for a Rhythmic leaning station because they don't suck everything else out of their playlist.
