Favorite 90s Dance Act?

German Dance act, Scooter, has my vote. A bit of a guilty pleasure at times, but some of their tracks are just brilliant!
They started out as mainly a Happy Hardcore act, back in 1994 when Happy Hardcore was topping the charts on Germany's Pop chart. Back then (between 94-96) you had artists like Marusha with "Somewhere Over The Rainbow", "It Takes Me Away", "Raveland", Legend B "Lost In Love", Westbam "Celebration Generation", Dune with classics like "Hardcore Vibes" or "Can't Stop Ravin" (and also "Rainbow To The Stars"), and of course RMB with "Love Is An Ocean", "Spring" and "Passport to Heaven" all charting very highly.
Scooter hit it big first with "Hyper Hyper", which sold over half a million copies around Europe, followed by my favorite "Move Your Ass". Holland had a bunch of successful acts too like Charly Lownoise & Mental Theo (they hit it big with "Wonderful Days)", and later with Paul Elstak.
Largely influenced by early 90s British acts like the KLF, and especially underground heroes, Ultrasonic, Scooter went on to become one of the biggest selling Dance acts of the 90s in the world! They were a phenomenon in Germany, Austria, Holland, Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, as well as most of eastern Europe. Just about every single they released (and there were many!) cracked the Top 10 charts in most of Europe.
Some of my personal favorites aside from "Move Your Ass" include "Rhapsody In E", "No Fate" (which is based on the classic "No Fate" by Zion, a huge Trance anthem in the early 90s with DJs like Sven Vath) "I'm Ravin I'm Ravin", "Mexico", "The Age of Love", "Let Me Be Your Valentine", "We Are The Greatest", "Friends", "Endless Summer", "Fire", and even the ballad "Break It Up".
In 2000 they had a huge Trance hit across Europe under the alias of Ratty with the song "Sunrise (Here I Am)".
Scooter are still around today, and a couple of years ago they even managed to crack the Top 5 on the UK Pop charts with tunes like "The Logical Song".

So, I guess this is my salute to the act that has never taken itself too seriously, here's to more of Scooter!

My nod goes to these acts:

Opus III
St. Etienne
Love Inc.
CeCe Peniston
Crystal Waters
Gina G
Euphoria(From Australia)
Ruff Driverz
Oxy
Whigfield

I did not realize Scooter was so big back in the 1990s! Oh--I almost forgot: I have a copy of 'Back In The UK.'

My Scooter favorites? Along with Ramp (The Logical Song), there's Jigga Jigga, Weekend, The Night, and One (Always Hardcore), a direct 'rip-off' of Pearl Jam's "Alive." But if you want a couple of sleepers, try Scooter's latest called "Suavemente", which was by Elvis Crespo, and "Shake That!" which samples KC & The Sunshine Band's "Shake Shake Shake (Shake Your Booty)"--that has the potential to do very well in the United States.

But my 90's dance vote, from what I've personally heard, is The Outhere Brothers. My all-time favorite of La La La Hey Hey is by them, with Boom Boom Boom and Ole Ole right behind it. La De Da De Da De isn't all that bad, either.

As far as I know, they only produced 2 CDs, their most recent in 1997 with "The Other Side", but their top-seller by far was their title of, extremely girl-derogatory, of 'One Polish Two Biscuits and a Fish Sandwich.' You guys can easily figure out what that title means. But yet, one of their songs from that first album (not going to type the title) is sampled on a booty-house track from I think 1998 that loops "Go ahead girl, put your leg up"--thought that was very interesting. But OHB is my vote.

Another one of my favorites. Wow! good call Robert :) They were a trio I think, and they really started out in like 1990 or 91 with "Only Love Can Break Your Heart". My favorite though was "Pale Movie", and "He's On The Phone". I loved the female singer's voice, as it always fitted so perfectly with the music.
I think there was a Greatest Hits released a while back. I'll have to check amazon.com, as it probably wouldn't hurt if I purchase it :)

Haha yeah Scooter rip off a lot of artists it seems. By the way, "One Always Hardcore" wasn't originally theirs either. I remember Staccato did well on the German Dance charts with "Always Hardcore" in 2001, and I suspect there might have been prior versions.
"Bakc In The UK" was great! I think they even did a version for Scotland called "Back In Scotland", or was it Ireland?
I remember Elvis Crespo's "Suavemente", as Power 96 Miami played the Dance remix. Paul Cles is currently Top 10 Top 10 in France with another version of it:
http://www.ifop.com/europe/sondages/top50/sgl0532.stm

The Outhere Bros. huh? :) They were from Chicago, and seemed to be influenced by both the Miami Bass scene, and the Chixago House and Euro scenes. They were Much bigger in Europe then they were in the US. B-96 Chicago and Energy 108 Toronto were among the few big supporters stateside, and Z-100 New York played "Boom Boom Boom" a lot in 97.
I remember their hits would always first get released in Italy. Then Germany and Holland, and finally the UK. They had a lot of success all over Europe in the mid 90s, and even topped the UK charts with "Boom Boom Boom". My favorite though was "La La La Hey Hey", and there was also "Pass The Toilet Paper".

Le Click pretty much equals La Bouche, with Melanie Thornton on voals. It's a real shame she tragically died a few years back. Le Click had one album if I'm not mistaken (I bought it), and La Bouche probably two.
Haddaways is still charting, and is currently in the top 100 in Germany with his new release, "Spaceman".
Planet Soul is obviously no more, as it was a mid 90s project/collaboration between George Acosta, and Nadine Renee. Nadine sadly passed away last year, while giving child birth :( Acosta of course is still doing his thing, spinning all over the country, and one of his latest releases was pounded the past few months by DJs like Judge Jules.
Gina G., she faded away pretty quickly. DJ Company only had like 2 releases I think "(Rhythm of Love", and the remake of "Forever Young")
Real Mccoy is an interesting mention. They actually started out around 1990 with "It's on You", but of course their big breakthrough came in 94 with "Another Night", and "Run away". It's a shame their follow up album had a lot less hits, and less success.
Snap, now there's a great 90s act, especially in the first half. From "The Power", to "Rhythm Is A Dancer", to "Welcome To Tommorow", and "Rame". The producers were top notch, and knew how to tap into the sounds of the moment, or sometimes even creating new Dance/Pop trends that everybody emulated.

2 Unlimited were HUGE in Europe. They were part of the first wave of crossover "Techno" acts, first hitting it big with the instrumental version of "Get ready For This". Then Anita and Ray joined the crew, top really help oush 2 Unlimited to the masses. They helped start that famous Rap/vocals combo heard in a lot of 90s Euro records. "No Limits" was MASSIVE in 93, and topped a lot of the European Pop charts. It was especially big with kids as the lyrics were so easy to repeat ("no no, no no no no, no no there's no limit" LOL). They had a lot of other hits, like "Tribal Dance", "Twilight Zone" (KIIS-FM L.A. was still playing it in 94), "Nothing Like The Rain", and "The Real Thing".

Jocelyn Enriquez released the excellent "Do You Miss Me", as well as a couple of other goodies.
Angelina, had a lot of releases, but to me was never as good as some of the other female singers from her camp. "Release Me" was okay I guess.
M:G only had a few singles released. Was there ever an album?
Josette and Buffy, I remember both of them had a song or two that made it to the playlists of stations like Wild 94.9 San Francisco, B-96 Chicago, and hot 103 San Antonio.
Technotronic are hard to forget, but "Pump Up The Jam" actually came out in 89. I think "Move This" was their only 90s hit. Of course, "Pump Up The Jam" has been remixed several times in the 90s, and is currently receiving a lot of attention from DJs, courtesy of the D.O.N.S. remix.
Kromozone Project pretty much ripped off Mix Factory's "Take Me Away", which is actually just a sample I believe of another song to feature the lyrics "Take Me Away".
Livin Joy were awesome with tunes like "Dreamer", and "Don't Stop Movin".
Corona, well the singer in Corona was featured on a LOT of different Italo projects. A good example is "The Summer Is Magic" by Playahitti.

You mentioned a lot of Freestyle acts, but where's Lisette Melendez? :)
And if you're going to list some good Euro acts you can't forget about the best one - Culture Beat. Culture Beat's early releases included "No Deeper Meaning", but their big breakthrough of course was with "Mr. Vein". Again, some of Germany's top Dance producers were involved in this project, and they were well in tune with what was hot in the German Dance clubs. "Mr. Vein", and the follow up "Got To Get It" are Dance classics, and there were countless Euro hits that relied on the "Mr. Vein" formula. The same is true for some of their mid 90s releases like "Inside Out".

Amazing that KSFM 102.5 in Sac (in my area) was also playing some of their songs in the 1990's.

> Jocelyn Enriquez released the excellent "Do You Miss Me", as
> well as a couple of other goodies.

Yeah she got tons of play in California as well as a good deal elsewhere. She put out a more recent album that didn't generate as much noise. Did love "When I Get Close To You", she also has a newer (not released on any of her albums) song called "Could You Be The One" which is a trancy freestyle song that can be found on the "Freestyle Lost & Found" compilation. I also liked her older stuff... "I've Been Thinking About You"- one of my favorite songs.

> Angelina, had a lot of releases, but to me was never as good
> as some of the other female singers from her camp. "Release
> Me" was okay I guess.

I probably liked "Without Your Love" and "I Don't Need Your Love" more than "Release Me", although that song got some pretty good airplay. She put out a second album which did ok, not as well as the first, but still got a bit of radio airplay, then released a third album that really left her old progressive freestyle sound for more of a house & latin house sound, this album has generated the least noise, and although Upstairs Records has been rumored to be working on a 4th, they seem to have her on hold as they focus on the NB Ridaz and Lil Rob on that label. They seem to be holding off on dance music.

> M:G only had a few singles released. Was there ever an
> album?

Yeah she had an excellent album with a nice mix of music. Mostly on the freestyle side but even a little on the drum n bass-ey side on a track or two (i.e. "Aprodisiac"). She supposedly is working on a second album with the talented Glen Gutierrez (M:G, Jocelyn Enriquez, Sharyn Maceren, Stevie B).

> Josette and Buffy, I remember both of them had a song or two
> that made it to the playlists of stations like Wild 94.9 San

Yeah they had a big following especially in the San Francisco area and Central Valley area of California. But I do remember hearing Jossette's "In A Dream" in Houston one time while driving through. Funny thing was that it was during the day and several years after that song was released.

> You mentioned a lot of Freestyle acts, but where's Lisette

Forgot about her. She has just released a song with Cynthia under the name "LisCyn", it's called "I Can't Change Your Mind" if I recall right. I know it is on itunes.

Yeah I think I got them in the list. :)
Can't forget about them. I'm sure there are some more I forgot too.

Inner City. Without question. I know that a couple of their most siginificant tracks were pre-90's (88-89 to be specific), but they were still my favorites up until they quit putting out material. I still credit Inner City's early stuff for turning me on to house music. :)

If I had to list a second, it would distantly be Black Box. I still love that classic Italo-house sound to this day.

Gotta give a nod to C&C Music Factory too... I know they were pretty mainstream, but it's hard to imagine dance music in the 90's without them. Clivilles and Cole were both pretty legendary producers back in their day.

> Le Click pretty much equals La Bouche, with Melanie Thornton

The "Tonight is the Night" Le Click was different from the "Call Me"
Le Click, correct?

> DJ Company only had like 2 releases I think "(Rhythm of Love", and the remake > of "Forever Young")

Is it true that "Rhythm of Love" was released in 1994, but didn't
start receiving (U.S.) radio airplay until 1997? That year, I
remember hearing it on Cyber Radio 92-7 in suburban Chicago
(which later became part of the "Energy 92-7 & 5" trimulcast) and I
believe that full-signalled B-96 played it as well.

> They had a lot of other hits, like "Tribal Dance", "Twilight
> Zone" (KIIS-FM L.A. was still playing it in 94), "Nothing
> Like The Rain", and "The Real Thing".

Between 1995 and 1997, Power 92 here in Phoenix played an
awesome hybrid of "Get Ready For This" and "Twilight Zone" called "Get
Ready For The Twilight Zone". Sometime last year, I'm pretty sure
that 104.7 Kiss-FM played it as well during their "Flashback
Friday" specialty show one Friday morning (which REALLY surprised me - I can't believe that any other station would choose to

play that special version!)

One of the best CD purchases I ever made was 2 Unlimited's greatest
hits album, called "Hits Unlimited".

> Jocelyn Enriquez released the excellent "Do You Miss Me", as
> well as a couple of other goodies.

The CD single for "Do You Miss Me" has at least four different (and
very good) versions of the song.

> Angelina, had a lot of releases, but to me was never as good
> as some of the other female singers from her camp. "Release
> Me" was okay I guess.

"Without Your Love" is my favorite from Angelina.

> M:G only had a few singles released.

"Sweet Honesty" is a great song!

> Josette and Buffy, I remember both of them had a song or two
> that made it to the playlists of stations like Wild 94.9 San

I remember Josette's hit "In a Dream", which I believe was re-made (?)
by Rockell. 103.9 here in Phoenix (when it was still KPTY) played the
Josette version.

I LOVE Buffy's "Give Me A Reason"!

> And if you're going to list some good Euro acts you can't

In addition to "Mr. Vain", "Got to Get It", and "Inside Out", I also love "Walk The Same Line", "Take Me Away", and "Crying

In The Rain." I think I have an aircheck of B-96 from 1996 in which "Walk The Same Line" was played on a mixshow...INCREDIBLE!

Here are my favorite dance acts from the 90's -- hopefully I haven't left any off this list...

Many of these 90's dance acts/songs were so much more mainstream than most of the dance product today...and so radio was much more receptive to the genre...I miss those days so much!

> Kim Sanders

A lot of people don't know this, but she was also the singer on Captain Hollywood Project's "More and More", as well as on other Euro-Dance projects, like Loft's "Hold On".
She had a fantastic release of her own titled "Show Me".

Maybe because I was so close to the project but Rockell is my favorite dance act of the 90's.

There were plenty of great dance songs from many talented artists but not many had 3 Hot 100 singles that also happened to be dance.

Yeah mine too!

Yeah, great song. Also "What Do You Remember" was great. Her version of "Think Twice" actually made it to #1 on Power 105.5 in Sac for some time. Also like "Make A Little Noise."

Yeah most of the west coast was playing Jossette's version.

Unfortunately she is done with music. Apparently she got screwed out of a lot of things including money, etc and had had enough.

Man, we must almost have the same taste in music! Great list above!

My few fave's weren't mentioned until that ulimate list was
complied...awesome list, by the way : )

to keep the list short and "Powerful" !! here is my top 5.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[5]. jam'n spoon - not to big on the hits..but the songs, they
did have, really were awesome : ) ( and the countless remixes of them!!
still are hot 2day.
*I Was happy to see them on the long list !!*

[4]. culture beat : ) they totally sizzled...
i am glad they had the impact they did on dance music..
early as well as mid 90's..they are trying to survive in the 2k
time frame, and i hope they continue to kick azz...

3. 2unlimited !! every one posted the best info about them, and i
agree 100% !! they owned the 90s..a song 10-12 years ago..and peeps
still play it (somewhere) once a shift/game/night@a straight/or gay bar..
they is winning formula for dance-music : )

[3]

red 5 - their one full length CD - was amazing. I picked it up
mid/late 90s..and hoped more from them - but still - LUV..their
music..I enjoy playing a mix-cd ( such as the wild-fm series) and
being surprised how freeakin INCREDIBLE their music was - - !! !!

2.
*SHOCKED* no one mentioned..
'two brothers/fourth floor' / they guys..who ever they were,
are soo amazing : ) they didnt "rule" the 90's..but 'quietly'
became a fave of mine..and, that day, when i woke up - and this
90s euro..became 'classic' -- i loved it when stations, like
kiss92/toronto, and of course, z103 played 2 bros.4th floor : )
(the live-remixes help the older stuff always sounder better -
but esp. for this group : )

1. technotronic:
simply loved them! had the full length cd, and the remix album..
i taped off the chr-mix show, the EP-releases( novelity/soundtrack
for ninja turtles movie, 'new/fresh' music that didnt exactly make it
to a cd/or release : ) but still was awesome...

fun post y'aLL : ) ! ! !

other's...
groups/songs from the 90s..i liked, but didnt "own" a year in the 90s
...but still - well, is awesome to hear now and again.

i enjoy the work that was done by my fellow "cross-over from punk" artistes; Peter Presta did an amazing job with Jayne(Wayne) County's "If You Don't Wanna F*** Me Baby,F*** Off!" for Royalty Records in the mid 90s,and the teaming of Cherry Vanilla with Man Parrish on Radikal Records' "Fone Sex"(and Joe Magic's dance music debut, the remix , as "Techno Sex",which was used as a bed by Z100 for their "OutQ Club Calendar" in the mid 90s)was inspired. Also, remixes from 80s brit star Toyah were making the rounds in the 90s, some of which show up on the brand new UK CD re issue of "Minx" by Toyah, which is now called "Minx-Plus" as it features the re mixes and the 80s hit waiting to happen,"Snow Covers The Kiss".
Edited by lalumia on 08/24/05 07:25 PM.
