Favorite Classic TV Mom?

Carol Brady.

Honorable Mention - Ruth Martin (June Lockhart from "Lassie"), Clair Huxtable, Debra Barone

Lucy Ricardo.

People forget that Lucy WAS a mom for at least part of I Love Lucy's run. Just think of all the great stories "Little Ricky" - now in his late 60s - has been able to tell his kids, and now his grandchildren, about their wacky great grandma and her antics.

For entertainment value and not quality parenting:

Edith Bunker
Sophia Petrillo
Mother Jefferson
Marie Barone
Grandma Walton

Shirley Partridge ;D

My vote is tied between Margaret Anderson of Father Knows Best (Jane Wyatt), and Kathy Williams of The Danny Thomas Show (Marjorie Lord).

Both were hot in their primes, yet they played such wholesome characters.

I have to go with Maureen Robinson (June Lockhart), the mom of the Space Family Robinson in "Lost In Space", simply because "L.I.S." is my all-time favorite TV show.

Now, if somebody will start a thread about "worst TV Moms", I'll sing "...And then there's Maude" for you.

June Lockhart has made a career out of playing mothers on TV.

She was Timmy's mom on "Lassie", the Robinson family matriarch on "Lost in Space", she essentially became the girls' de-facto mom on "Petticoat Junction" playing the lady doctor after Bea Benaderet had passed away, and even in recent years she was on a few episodes of "The Drew Carey Show" as the mother of Drew's buddy Lewis.

And chalk me up as another vote for Maude being the worst TV mom.

My sentimental favorite for TV mom is Michael Learned's "Olivia Walton". A mom who's just about a perfect balance between sweet/sensitive and strength/determination of will.

Only thing is......Don't get on her bad side.....unless you want to spend the weekend memorizing 10 Bible verses. ;D

Great answers so far, thanks. I'm not sure if she was the best mom on TV but to me she was certainly the best looking mom on TV and that's Samantha Stevens (Elizabeth Montgomery) on Bewitched!

As for worst TV mom, Maude would be number 2 in my book right behind Roseanne Barr!

Good Lord!

Imagine if those 2 characters were ever on the same show.

Yeeesh!

And, what do "Maude" and "Roseanne" have in common? They are both loud mouthed, annoying and bossy (place your description here)... I'll say... "bossy control freaks". I wish they would have been together on the same show at its inception because their boorish nature would have made it a one season, or less, disaster, and we'd be done with them quicker.

Olivia Walton and Esther Walton of The Waltons (others have already mentioned them)
Cecilia Simon on Simon & Simon
Abby Bradford in Eight is Enough
Currently it would have to be Cecilia Braverman in Parenthood
I also really liked Elizabeth Stoddard in Dark Shadows, but it was because Joan Bennett was such a good actress, not because of Elizabeth's parenting capabilities.
