Favorite Motown Groups and Hits

Who are your top favorite Motown groups? Lets try to get a fun discussion started.

Mine are the Four Tops and the Temptations. My favorite song by the Four Tops is probably "It's the Same Old Song" and "Reach Out, I'll Be There".

You gotta love the classic "My Girl" by the Temptations.

There are other plenty of great artists, groups, and songs to name.

I also found a Wikipedia page on Motown. Its pretty interesting.

Smokey Robinson and The Miracles. I love their style.

Ooh Baby Baby.

> 4 Tops- Its The Same Old Song
Temptations- I COuld Never Love Another After Loving You
Stevie Wonder- Uptight
Marvin Gaye- Too Busy Thinking About My Baby
Smokey Robinson- I Second That Emotion
Supremes- Love Is Like An Itchin In My Heart

How 'bout "Jamie" by Eddie Holland from 1962 (early Motown!)?

> I Second That Emotion! Can't hear "More Love" without

Martha and The Vandellas: "Dancin' in the street", "Quicksand", "I'm ready for love", "Come and get these memories".

Right on! The CKLW slow logo at :07 into Smokey Robinson & the Miracles - More Love

What could be better?

How about the Top of the hour break into Stevie Wonder - Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours with the first few seconds laid under to the point where Stevie yells.

I think is the best breakup song of all time ... Temptations - Since I Lost My Baby. Who else but Smokey could write something like this?

The sun is shining, there's plenty of light (oh yeah)
A new day is dawning, sunny and bright (oh yeah)
But after I've been crying all night
The sun is cold, and the new day seems old
Since I lost my baby. (Since I lost my baby.)
Oh, since I lost my baby. (Oh, since I lost my baby.)

The birds are singing and the children are playing
There's plenty of work and the bosses are paying
Not a sad word should a young heart be saying
But fun is a bore and with money I'm poor.

Since I lost my baby. (Since I lost my baby.)
Oh, since I lost my baby. (Oh, since I lost my baby.)
Next time I'll be kinder (Next time I'll be kinder)
Won't you please help me find her (Won't you please help me find her)
Someone just remind her (Someone just remind her)
Of this love she left behind her (Of this love she left behind her)
Till I find her I'll be trying ta (Till I find her I'll be trying ta)
Everyday I'm more inclined ta
Find her
Inclined ta
Find her
Inclined ta find my baby
Been looking everywhere (ba--by)
Baby, I really, really care!

Oh, determination is fading fast (oh yeah)
Inspiration is a thing of the past (oh yeah)
Can't see how my hope's gonna last
Good things are bad and what's happy is sad

Since I lost my baby. (Since I lost my baby.)
Oh, since I lost my baby. (Oh, since I lost my baby.)
I feel so bad (since I lost my baby)
I feel so sad (since I lost my baby)
Everything is wrong
This heart is hard to carry on (since I lost my baby)
I'm lost as can be (since I lost my baby)
What's gonna happen to me?

A few more just popped into my head ...

Gladys Knight & The Pips - "End of Our Road". ... and "If I Were Your Woman." Although done later, "I've Got To Use My Imagination" and "Midnight Train To Georgia" were honkin' tunes.

Maybe .... Martha & The Vandellas - Honey Child

Howzabout .... The Four Tops - Just My Imagination

Lets remember ... Edwin Starr - SOS and 25 Miles .. also Headline News (the Big 8 played these in pretty high rotation)

Not to be forgotten ... The Marvellettes - Don't Mess With Bill (great bass run) and Destination Anywhere .. also The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game

Marvellous Marvin Gaye - almost all of his early stuff was really well done and the duets with Tammy Terrell and Kim Weston were songs that likely blew a few speakers in stereo systems.

For some fun stuff, The Jackson 5 - I Want You Back, ABC, and The Love You Save all had a great feel to them.

Another group that sounded dynamic on The Big 8 was Jr. Walker & The All Stars - What Does It Take (To Win Your Love For Me) and one that was on the playlist when I worked there .. "Gotta Hold Onto This Feeling" from early 1970.

And special mention has to go to the guys in the background of almost all of these hits ... The Funk Brothers.

Regards,
Lee Smith

Midnight Train to Georgia is one of my favorites by them It is a wonderfully written song and the music is great. I have it on one of my cds.

I also love the Isley Brothers "This Old Heart of Mine". I really enjoy the saxaphone music in that one.

Supremes -- "Up the Ladder to the Roof" (right up there with their best work with Diana, IMO)
