FAVORITE RADIO PERSONALITY IN CENTRAL PA!!!

John Paul Shaffer is no longer at Wink 104. He is currently the morning anchor at Beasley Broadcasting - KDWN-AM in Las Vegas, NV. John Beaston, a former personality from Bob 94.9 (Wes Shore), is now doing the morning news at WINK.

Bruce Bond has a website that hasn't been updated in ages: http://www.brucebond.com

Well you can always get on WINK 104's website and email John Paul Shaffer and ask him about Bruce. I emailed John 2 years ago and he told me Bruce is in NYC no longer in radio. [EDIT] I was too chicken to email him. I miss him!

[EDIT-privacy concerns]

I am not sure if my message went through or not but several years ago I emailed John Paul Shaffer of WINK 104 to ask about Bruce Bond. Bruce is no longer in radio. He lives in NYC. I have his email address. I don't know if it still works or not.

What's Bruce doing for a living now? Anybody know?

A few years ago a company I worked with was instrumental in getting Greaseman back on the radio following his banishment from DC. He was not only grateful for the break, but he turned out to be a great employee and a huge ratings grabber. Last time I checked, Grease was on DC's "new" 50-kw AM, 1160/WMET--still being dissed by the Big Boys, but at least he's back on the radio, where he belongs.

So how long has Bond been on the beach, now? Two or three years? That's a shame--he's a great talent.

And, yeah, one of only two truly outstanding radio personalites--along with Ron Drake--to ever grace the airwaves of Central PA radio. Plenty of good, solid jocks... but, really, only two "stars."

Yep...It's me...How have you been? I miss my Central PA radio days & friends! I'm now in southern California, co-hosting mornings in Riverside-San Bernardino on KOLA 99.9! What's new in PA? Where is everyone? What's everyone been up to? I get the opportunity to read this board from time to time & enjoy catching up.

Do you remember playing softball for a team of folks with Central PA radio stations against Michael Bolton's Bombers in York back in the 90's? WINK, WARM and WYCR teamed up against the Bolton team. I think there were other stations involved, too. Which one did you work for? One of the radio guys (can't remember his name...was it Captain Conners?) hit a grand slam and we were within striking distance of tying the Bolton team when it started raining and the game ended. Do you remember any of that?

For some strange reason my posts keep poofing. I wanted to say that Bruce Bond (FRom WINK 104) is now in NYC and no longer in radio. I have his email address. I remembered it from years ago. I don't think I am allowed to say it here though.

Not sure if this is a (semi) serious conversation about great Central PA personalities or whether I'm interrupting an Old Home Week get together (my apologies), but...

In the Top 40/CHR realm, Bob Ditto (a/k/a Sky King & Shotgun Johnny Ringo) was one of the best sheer talents ever to hit the air in Hbg/York. Crazy... but, man, he had the chops.

In the AC arena, Rod Burnham of WSBA--and the creator of WGTY, if I'm not wrong--should have a spot in the Hall of Fame, too. Production wizard... but a great on-air jock, as well.

i enjoy listening to jim buchanan (sp?) on smooth jazz 92.7 on weekend afternoons. isn't he also the weatherman (or was the weatherman) on Channel 43? how did the 43 weatherman wind up on smooth jazz? ;D Interesting combo. anyway, great voice and sounds like he has an interest in the format.

Wow! Hearing the name Bob Ditto really brings back some memories!! He was working part-time at 98YCR when I was there...he and I used to have some very interesting conversations. I would say that he would qualify as Central PA's first "shock jock" in his early days at Q106....but imagine him flying a plane?? He offered to take me up many times, but never got the chance...wasn;t sure if I'd make it back down :)

And for the record, Rod Burnham was NOT the creator of WGTY...that was the brain child of myself and Rick McCauslin (now OM at WHVR/WYCR)....we were there when the FM was automated Beautiful Music and he came to me with the idea that we should flip to Country...so with him as GM and myself as PD, we went out and started buying Country music...getting everything together for the format flip...hired Dave "Boom Boom" Cannon to do middays (yes folks he's been there 23 years this coming November), Pat Case (R.I.P.) to do nights...Rick did afternoons and I did mornings. Signed on as "Country FM 108" on Veteran's Day, November 11, 1984.....Rod Burnham came in a few months later, sold the Gettysburg Times on him being the best thing to hit radio since sliced bread, and proceeded to fire both Rick & me...Creator?? No way...but I'll get off my soapbox now :) We now return to the real topic of conversation, already in progress.....

"Slim" Jim Buchannan was a disc jockey long before he was a TV weatherman. Back in the '70s, he was a big part of one of the best air staffs this area has ever heard; Jim was the midday man on Music Radio WKBO. He worked elsewhere before that. I remember working with Jim for a short time at Sunny99; not long after he started with us, he got the call to do TV weather, but not at FOX...that came later. Anyway, Jim has always been an excellent radio personality with a fantastic voice.

Actually, it's a little bit of both. Welcome to the discussion! I know I'm loving both parts of the conversation.

Pattie! Greetings from one of your faceless fans back in Central PA! Thanks for bringing a moment of California sunshine to our section of this board! Gosh I just love seeing where everyone has ventured to (although I much prefer when the familiar voices are somewhere on my dial!)

Hiya Patti:

It's great to hear from you! I'm still in Baltimore, holding down morning news at 93.1 WPOC. I do think of the old Dame Media days and smile every now and then!

Since I was only in the area for about seven years, and therefore just a blip on the radio radar, I have a limited perspective on my top five, and they're going to be somewhat Dame-centered. But here they are, in no particular order:

1. Bob Durgin - Quite simply, the best communicator in town. Give me a physical break! I loved filling in for you, brother.

2. Jed Donahue - A brain full of sports knowledge, and seamless play-by-play. It's always an adventure working with Jed.

3. R.J. Harris - Staying power, likeability and a good guy to have on your team.

4. Tod & Nancy - Played "Harvey Taylor" with them when we put BOB on the air in December, '96. Learned a lot from both, and had a ball.

5. Al Dame - Through the thick and thin, my loyalty was always to J. Albert. Sit in his office and let him talk about radio and instantly feel great about what you do for a living. I will always be in his debt for where I am today.

I could have made it a top 20 list, but those are my biggies. Your mileage may vary.

Hey Bill~

Hope Baltimore is treating you well! I loved visiting that city & did so every chance I had! I remember those days very well! I actually shared an office with Bob Durgin...oh what fun conversations we had! ;D

RJ's the best!

Where did Jeff Donaldson go? What about Bill Richardson? Is he still in Arizona?

Stay well...

Patti, last I heard, Bill Richardson is still with Metro out in Arizona, where he is one of the top dogs.

I lost track of Jeff Donaldson, but someone told me he had done some television in Youngstown, and may be out of the business now.

Those were heady times...we had a great newsroom then: Bill, Jeff, Freddie Snyder, Kathryn Barrans and later, Peter MacArthur, Jay Smith, Steve Wagner and Samantha Elliott. And with Dennis & Melanie on mornings, Jed Donahue and Bob Durgin, the station was on a hard roll, as Jed would say.

I remember one Sunday when a plane crashed in the Susquehanna River. Bill, Dennis and I all went out to cover what turned out to be a ditching with no serious injuries. We went back to the station and had one minute before the network 'cast to get it done. We managed to do a "team coverage" roundabout in less than 60 seconds, and made it sound cool. We were (and still are) such news geeks.

Glad to hear things are well in Cali, Patti. Be well!

Bill

Thanks, Bill...

Yep...it was quite a team back then.

I just heard about Melanie Apple...so sad. Melanie was one of the best & I'll always remember her...way too young to leave us. I was glad to read she had much enjoyment with her church & faith.

Bill---no Wes Shore in there? Remember the day you went into the Bob studio to let that jerk know that there was a flood warning and he should get it on the air right away, and he went into one of his little rants? I recall him saying something to you to the effect of, "I don't care if cars are floating down the G**damn street...I'm not reading a stupid flood warning!!!"

All I can remember thinking is: One: I wish you would've puched the little sissy, and Two: how we LIVED IN A RIVER TOWN where flooding was taken very seriously! But he was Wes Shore. Nobody was gonna tell HIM what to do.

marketweis...I guess I must know you? Sorry, it's late...and the memory banks ain't working so good tonight. Love to know who you are...send me a message, willya?

As for Mr. Beaston...at the time, I kinda chalked him up as a 2-20 (two years experience, 20 years knowledge), but time makes you re-evaluate. In the end, he was alright with me.

Yeah, we butted heads a couple of times, but as someone once pointed out to me, I wasn't always the most diplomatic person in the building either. Judge not, lest ye be judged, y'know.

By the way, the bulletin eventually aired.
