Favourite Canadian radio station, past and present

What was your favourite Canadian Station as a kid and what's your favourite now?

Growing up it was definitely 630 CHED. Today, it's a tie between CILV 88.5 and CINW 940

1050 CHUM, before The Team. Today I mostly listen to CJBK in London, and when the signal's good, CFCO in Chatham. Travelling I'll often listen to CKOC in Hamilton, and 680 News for traffic reports (although if it's a time of day they do traffic, CBLA's traffic reports are more complete and accurate). Last couple times I put on 1050 I got talk shows, so I don't even bother with them now.

92 CITI FM circa 1980-85. Air talents like Terry DiMonte, Brother Jake, Andy Frost, Howard Mandshein, JJ Johnston. A pretty good PD in Steve Young who went on to program radio in Seattle and New York. One of the best rock stations I remember listening to in my travels across Canada in the day.

680 Seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Eff tee R! (680 CFTR)

That was an amazing hit music station.

Today, I like Oldies 1150 (CKOC) for the oldies, 680 News and the internet for anything else because radio on both the am and fm side are just garbage today.

There's not enough live and local content. I wonder where radio will find radio talent down the road, since the overnight isn't in use anymore anywhere outside of 680 news.

Sad, really.

CINW in Montreal is running a contest called talk show Idol...¿Isn't CFRB doing that to0? where the winner will get there own show. I love the fact that they have so many GOOD talk show hosts on the station, both local and satellite, Today was a treat for talk show fans as all the hosts had strong topics and guests, which is why I enjoy listening to them so much. For past I forgot to mention the station that gave me my first experience in radio CJSW 90.9 in Calgary.

Eventhough I'm not Canadian, I truly enjoyed listening to radio from North of the Border. My favorites from the past......

800 CKLW Windsor/Detroit "The BIG 8!"
1050 CHUM Toronto "1050/CHUM"
940 CBM Montreal pre-1974, when it was a commercial station
960 CHNS Halifax, NS via CHNX/6130 shortwave (now deleted)
600 CFCF Montreal via CFCX/6005 shortwave (now deleted)
97.7 CHOM Montreal "Shom FM"
1580 CBJ Chicoutimi, QC CBC/French (now deleted)

Today......

1580 CKDO Oshawa, ON oldies
1050 CHUM Toronto oldies

I did not grow up in Canada, I grew up and still live in Chicago. I had to join this conversation and say my favorite station is CHWO
AM 740 I listen online a lot and after sundown I listen over the air in my home or car, This is a very unique station, I hope they
never change.

Happy Holidays from Chicago!

If we're going to turn this to "present", I'd say its a tossup between CHWO and CKBD (Vancouver).

Personally, I prefer more rock-oriented oldies. But to my taste/observation, the Canadian oldies stations (CHUM, CIWW, CISL etc.) for the most part are increasingly lacking in creativity, and becoming as dumbed-down and boring as their American counterparts....albeit with Can-Con.

CIWW has been playing a lot of 80's music over the past few months, and now calls itself a classic hits station. Sometimes they'll rock out, playing Loverboy or Heart, and the occasional prog rock track, but it's still a pop oriented station. There's still some 60's music on there, but it is often squeezed between something more recent. Most recent song I've heard on CIWW is Life is A Highway...if memory serves me right that's 1992. I have to agree that the Canadian stations lack in direction or creativity. To me, KIOA in Des Moines, Iowa back in the late 80's into the 90's was the ultimate oldies station. Then again, oldies today isn't what it was 20 years ago. I'm finding it really un-nerving to see songs from high scho0l on oldies stations...and I'm only 32.

I was reluctant to include CIWW in my last post, because to me it sounds like something of a mess. No longeer typical.  The others I mentioned sound much better focused.

As for KIOA....Indeed, it was one of the best anywhere. Perhaps even THE best.  But now management has accelerated the dismantling of a good thing (despite consistently strong ratings).  As you may know, Dic Youngs, a KIOA legend and a fixture there since 1966 was unceremoniously dumped earlier this fall.

In addition to "The Old Youngster", KIOA also gassed longtime popular and talented morning drive news anchor, Polly Carver-Kimm.

The best oldies station, in my opinion, has to be Oldies 1150 because they at least are live from 6AM-7PM Monday to Friday, unlike all the other oldies stations that just leave the PC running after the morning show.

CHWO is a great station too, but they play older classics than what I prefer to listen to when wanting the oldies sound.

I shed a tear when I read about the firing of the old youngster. I think he'd been at KIOA since the early to mid 60's. Rumour has it KRNT has picked him up for a saturday night oldies show. CHWO is obviously a national treasure. One of the most diverse stations I've heard in a long time, and they SOUND go0d. Reading elsewhere on the message boards, it seems that many people wish they had the station locally. Furthest I've ever heard them....New Orleans. Seriously, CHWO should be treasured and valued for as long as it stays as go0d as it is.

I picked up CHWO earlier this month just north of Atlanta. Not a great signal, but strong enough to overcome the splatter from WSB. I've also heard it in Memphis, Kansas City, and Sioux Falls. Again, none of those with a particulary robust signal, but still definitely audible and on top of the 740 channel.

I would not be surprised to see Rogers attempt a News1310 with CIWW, given their very low ratings in Ottawa. Their oldies station in Calgary, CFFR, had low ratings and flipped to 660News a year or two ago.

I did ponder that same thought around the same time this website was born:

www.580news.com

but keep on mind, it's alot cheaper to just leave the oldies running than it is to try and run a very expensive all news format.

Granted, they could perhaps run a skeleton staff with most of the content coming out of the Rogers Toronto building.
(Medical minute, canada wide business news, etc...)

Too bad A channel Ottawa didn't become a Rogers property...then they could just use A channel weather for the weather reports...

I doubt Oldies 1310 is all that profitable for Rogers though. An all-news format would be more costly to set up and run, but if they think they can get sufficient ratings, then it could be more profitable than the current format.

That said, an all-news format for CIWW would have a lot of difficulty attracting ratings, given the radio news competition there.

The funny thing is, Rogers had the chance to go all sports on 1310 before the former owner of AM1200 (Rawlco) went with OSR 1200 (Ottawa sports radio) back in the day. (pre Chum owned Team 1200)

I thought if Rogers wanted to get out of oldies, they would have done so at that time. (before then, Energy 1200 had the chance)

Too late for sports, but if they want to do newswheel, they do have good resources to do so, and should hurry on it before CTV group somehow figures it's *smart (to do on 580)...even if it's only for morning and afternoon drive...

*smart for morning and afternoon drive, wether CTV does it on 580, or Rogers were to at least give it a try on CIWW durring that time, respectfully.
