By Jeffrey Yorke

Senators pressed FCC Chairman Kevin Martin and four other commissioners on the progress of the ongoing media ownership rules and demanded that the commission conclude its survey of consumer's feelings about how their public interests are being served before the agency rewrites any regulations.

During a Thursday (Feb. 1) Senate Commerce Committee hearing billed "Assessing the Communications Marketplace: A View from the FCC" that featured the rare appearance of all five FCC commissioners before the committee, Sen. Byron Dorgan told Martin that "the market from time to time needs a referee and that's the job of the FCC." And he became emphatic when he told the commissioners, "You shouldn't start ownership issues until you finish localism hearings."
