FCC approves Birach CP move to Illinois

The FCC has approved Birach Broadcasting’s application to relocate their CP from a new station on 640 in Terre Haute, IN to Peotone, IL just outside Joliet. This move means the demise of Birach’s WMFN-AM 640 Zeeland/Grand Rapids, MI. The Peotone AM would interfere with WMFN.

International Programming by Birach

Looking at the 4 array directional antenna coverage proposed by Birach, ethnic programming is the only economically viable format. Does Internet radio with 24/7 programming from the person's home country, make this format obsolete?

Birach is quite adept at generating cashflow from ethic programming. Not a big loss for the TH market nor a big gain for Chicago/Joliet.

Yes, this was A Loss for Terre Haute!

I live 5 miles from the Terre Haute city limits and for several years could not get one Terre Haute AM station at night. The 1300 Khz. frequency has been turned into the FCC, the directional 1480 Khz. cannot be heard except south of the city and the 1230 Khz. frequency suffers from local interference. Only the 640 Khz. could be listened to in surrounding Vigo County when the station was on.

The way Birach handled the auction by waiting one year to change the location of the CP after bidding for Terre Haute looked bad. I am hoping Birach builds the station in Peotone, IL instead of trying to sell the CP to one of the big chains and making a huge profit.

The original broadcaster on 1230 Khz. applied for the frequency of 640 Khz. because 1230 had coverage limitations. This was done in the early 1990's. The only other AM frequency in Terre Haute is 1480 and because of the directional antenna, sends practically all the power at night to the south leaving a good portion of Terre Haute uncovered.

Wow...wow CP expires in 2104!

2104...they better get crackin' before AM goes the way of the internet goes the way of reliable telepathic thought...

Way back 25 years or so, when WOI 640 Ames IA added a second tower for 1 kW nights, Iowa State University might have had a shot to bump the 5 kW ND day pattern to 10 or maybe 20 kW. But pulling pledges from Illinois and Nebraska wasn't very likely. The 5 kW day signal of WOI probably overshoots its natural market already.

A commercial broadcaster might have gone for more power just to keep other potential stations off of the same frequency. It's like how farmers go for bigger implements. Point is (took me long enough) that had WOI spent an extra $50k or $100k to power up, it would have saved Birach from making a several hundred thousand dollar mistake in Illinois with a 640 kHz station.
