FCC Approves Cross Ownership in Major Cities

In a 3-2 vote split along party lines, after 32 years a broadcast company can now own a radio station, television station as well as a newspaper in the nations top 20 markets.

Kevin Martin, Chairman of the FCC, who'a a republican voted in favor of lifting the 32 year old ban and the other two republican Commisioners voted in favor, while the two democrats voted against lifting the ban.

There was a time not too long ago when the Tribune Company owned WPIX-TV 11, WPIX-FM then WQCD 101.9 and the Daily News.

What effect are we going to see from this? When the Telecommunications Act in 1996 went into effect, that allowed a broadcast company to own up to eight radio stations in a major market. Clear Channel owns six FM stations in NYC.

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy
