FCC asking for money to hire agents for PIRATE ACT

Personally, I haven't heard or tracked a pirate in the SLC market in about 20 years. Maybe they are buried under the noise.

......
Regarding RFI: No. Not among their priorities.

Isn't interference supposed to be the big deal that created a need to stop pirates? Certainly it's not that they just don't have an EAS box.

So, what is a "Pirate" then? Just a guy without a piece of paper? That's what a lot of folks will think, when they hear that the mean old FCC fined some guy tons of money in their town. (It's happened before...making the FCC look like some evil Gestapo organization.)
At least the idea that they can cause interference (RFI) legitimized the whole idea of stopping "pirates".

I just want the FCC to have some money to police the spectrum, like they were created to do.

'to police the spectrum' = eliminate/prevent interference

Pirates don't cause RFI: Electromagnetic interference (EMI), also called radio-frequency interference (RFI) when in the radio frequency spectrum, is a disturbance generated by an external source that affects an electrical circuit by electromagnetic induction, electrostatic coupling, or conduction. The disturbance may degrade the performance of the circuit or even stop it from functioning. In the case of a data path, these effects can range from an increase in error rate to a total loss of the data. Both man-made and natural sources generate changing electrical currents and voltages that can cause EMI: ignition systems, cellular network of mobile phones, lightning, solar flares, and auroras (northern/southern lights). EMI frequently affects AM radios. It can also affect mobile phones, FM radios, and televisions, as well as observations for radio astronomy and atmospheric science.

FM Pirates

As I read it, they want to appropriate over $300 million to get rid of about 300 pirates. I'm no fan of pirate radio, but wouldn't just be cheaper to buy them out?

Nope...the $300 million is the entire FCC budget. Just $11 million for pirates. To buy them out, do you have an address where the FCC can mail the check?

Just look for the usual Ramsey Electronics FM antenna on the roof. Leave the check there.
(Don't believe me? Just Google Street View the addresses from the FCC notices ☺ .)
