FCC Auction 109

For 107.9 FM (MM-FM1192-B):
Looks like they completed 4 rounds today. Currently, the provisionally winning bid is VCY America at $218k.
Rounds 5-8 and auction completion scheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday 7/28).

How do these bidders all come up with the same bid price if they aren't talking to each other prior to the bidding process? Isn't this against the auction rules as published in the rules issued by the FCC? Just asking to add to the conversation.

They added Rounds 9-12 to the schedule for Thursday. At end of round 6 VCY is still the PWB at $522k. But as Michael stated, others are also actively bidding.
Now that VCY took over Ed’s other CA stations they seem to be aggressively pursuing more facilities in the state.

Today’s bidding ended at $1.239M…a tie between Upbeat Frequency, Sunriver Broadcasting, VCY, and iHeart. Looks like at least 2 more days scheduled due to the bidding interest.

Looks to be one of the better producing broadcast license auctions. Interesting to see other names in the list of bidders. Upbeat Frequency? Sunriver Broadcasting?

I've never participated in an auction. One of my employers did around 2005, but I wasn’t personally involved. So, I don’t know the specifics, but it almost seems like there’s a maximum bid or increment for each round. If that’s the case, that might explain why so many bids match. I know there are also a certain number of waivers. So, just because EMF, for example, didn’t bid on the frequency today might not mean it has given up.

I have a friend who is participating in this auction. Once it's said and done, I'll probably ask him about the bidding and how he figured what he did. I've also been surprised to find that 104.1 in Sanger, TX is, so far, fetching more than 107.9. While technically a Dallas station and covering a fast growing area, it really doesn’t put much of a signal into the Metroplex. The 107.9 Class B in Sacto is, in my opinion, a much better allotment.

Well after 12 rounds the top bid is now EMF at $3.4M. iHeart was ahead in the previous round. Methinks the big dogs may have narrowed the playing field at these bid amounts. We’ll see what happens tomorrow. Both groups have lots of $$ but how much is the signal really worth. It’s short spaced to KSAN but still a good facility and could possibly move a bit east to increase height I suppose if new owner chooses to build a new facility.

I can’t imagine the bidding will go much higher. Assuming they’re able to use the existing line and antenna from D-KDND, it’d make sense they could probably get the whole operation running for $100-200k more than the auction price. I’d argue in a market the size of Sac, given the state of the industry and the weird financial times we live in, a class B license (no physical plant, format, studios, etc.) would probably fetch no more than $4-5M

So, assuming it’s either iHM or EMF, any bets on what format ends up there? If it’s EMF, do they end up selling KLVB or KLRS?

Your valuation sounds right. At first I was thinking $6-7M but it’s essentially a new facility with no existing audience. And figuring potential new antenna and rig.

If EMF gets it I would bet they unload KLVB - its at a good spot on the comm band and a nice little Class A for someone. So 300B would be a nice upgrade for them.
