Update the leader of Tik Tok is in a congressional hearing.
So millions of people make a living on TikTok. Yes, they can all move to Instagram and YouTube. My question? Will all of the right-wing TikTok creators (of which there are many) leave the platform immediately?
PARIS (AP) — France announced Friday it is banning the “recreational” use of TikTok, Twitter, Instagram and other apps on government employees’ phones because of concern about insufficient data security measures.
The move follows similar restrictions on TikTok in democratic countries amid fears about the popular video-sharing app’s Chinese connections. But the French decision also encompassed other platforms widely used by government officials, lawmakers and President Emmanuel Macron himself.
The French Minister for Transformation and Public Administration, Stanislas Guerini, said in a statement that ’’recreational″ apps aren’t secure enough to be used in state administrative services and ”could present a risk for the protection of data.”
Flanked by a raft of TikTok power users, Reps. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.), Mark Pocan (D-Wis.) and Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) denounced efforts to boot the app from the United States as an affront on free expression online that would harm small businesses and digital creators.
“Our First Amendment gives us the right to speak freely and to communicate freely, and TikTok as a platform has created a community and a space for free speech for 150 million Americans and counting,” Bowman said while standing alongside over two dozen TikTok influencers.
Our right-wing folks know that young people communicate and organize on Tik-tok, and blame young people for the lack of a red wave. So cutting that means of communication and organization off would be no shock. Not everyone is in favor of banning TikTok.
A lot of young voters use TikTok, and it's not good politics to ban something 150 million people use.
The bans in several dozen countries now are exclusively limited to loading TikTok on government issued phones and devices, with the concern being security since there is a belief that the Chinese authorities have access to all data on the service. At issue is the fact that all "businesses" in China, while headed by entrepreneurs, is severely controlled and watched by the CCP.Our right-wing folks know that young people communicate and organize on Tik-tok, and blame young people for the lack of a red wave. Our legislature banned TikTok on all college campuses, which of course means absolutely no one will bypass the campus wi-fi and use their own data plan or a VPN to access TikTok. It's interesting because the University of Tennessee and other state universities have TikTok accounts for promotion in general, sports recruiting and promotion, etc, Are they supposed to close them. TikTok reaches the demographics they want. The bans in several dozen countries now are exclusively limited to loading TikTok on government issued phones and devices, with the concern being security since there is a belief that the Chinese authorities have access to all data on the service. Montana lawmakers on Thursday advanced a bill that aims to ban the use of TikTok in the state, due to concerns about national security, privacy and the app's content.
Senate Bill 419, which would take effect in January, prohibits TikTok from operating in Montana, and prohibits internet service providers and app stores from offering TikTok to users in Montana.
The bill would not penalize users, but provides for sanctions of $10,000 per day against TikTok and mobile app stores.
House lawmakers advanced the measure Thursday by a vote of 60-39, and are expected to vote for a final time on Friday. The state Senate passed the proposed law last month by a 30-20 vote.
Montana has become the first state to approve a bill that would ban TikTok over the possibility that the Chinese government could request Americans' data from the wildly popular video-streaming app.
The GOP-controlled Montana House of Representatives sent the bill on Friday to Republican Gov. Greg Gianforte, who can now sign the measure into law.
The bill makes it illegal to download TikTok in the state, with penalties of up to $10,000 a day for any entity, such as Apple and Google's app stores or TikTok itself, that makes the popular video-streaming app available.
If enacted, the ban in the state would not start until January 2024.
A federal court challenge from TikTok is expected well before then, likely teeing up a legal brawl that supporters of the law in Montana say could eventually wind up in front of the U.S. Supreme Court.
How in the world do you ban TikTok on a state level? You get pulled over "give me your license, registration, insurance and phone!"
Now Official Montana approves to ban Tik Tok. This stuff will be challenged on the national level.

Brooke Oberwetter, a TikTok spokesperson, said the bill's backers have admitted that there is "no feasible plan" for putting the TikTok ban in place, since blocking downloads of apps in any one individual state would be almost impossible to enforce.
