FCC Fines WOBO $3,000

I don't care if a business donates to NPR or the local non comm. I don't like the free ride that they get. Most of them make big time money and spend it like crazy.

It is time that they started paying their FCC fees.

Don't agree JRY. Wanna see our books?
The very nature of a non-profit is to carry out their mission with a hope and a prayer that you can find the funding. We do it on dust droppings! You have the free ride being able to sell commercials. If non-comms made so much money, why did you sell yours and move to commercial radio and go to a large expense to do so?

I do not doubt your financial claims. Some do work hard to eke out their existence.
I am a for profit corporation that PAYS FOR YOUR existence. Your free ride is calculated into what i send the FCC, every year for the use of the free airwaves. You guys pay no sales tax, no income tax, your donors donate and take that off of their taxes and we commercial guys pay for it.
I ditched the non comm because i was unwilling to skirt the rules on "Call to Action". If an operator runs by the rules, half of what is aired in the name of grants would result in fines.
Our experiment in the wild world of non comm resulted in a station that was in the top ten. We had guys wanting to buy spots and couldn't run them.

If you pay for my existence then where is the check! It's late! You don't pay for my ANYTHING. Rules are rules. There are no fees for non-comms. If there were, do you really think the FCC would lower their fees that they charge you? We don't pay taxes because we are a 501(c)3 and if we did, we still wouldn't because we would show that we made no profit after expenses. You can also file to be a non-profit and not pay taxes either! I don't get a free ride and resent you saying that. I work 14-16 hour days, 6 days a week to serve my community! You commercial guys don't pay for any of our expenses. While I can't speak for you, in general, most commercial guys don't do half of what we do to serve our community.

Sure i do, Nuts.

The FCC has an annual budget. They are almost 100 percent self funded. They get very little from Congress. That means that we commercial broadcasters pay the fees and fines that keep them open and functioning. We pay an annual fee for the spectrum. Last year, mine was 25K. What did you pay them.
So, you pay nothing for transfers, spectrums, renewals, NADA. The work they do for you and the other non comms is paid for by us, your friendly commercial broadcaster.

No. You don't pay my fees. I have none. The work the FCC does for non-commercial stations is Pro Bono. They do not charge for it because of the nature of our broadcast service. The $25k you paid is a drop in the bucket. You paid that much for your BillBoards, didn't you? Petty cash.

Basic law of economics: There is no such thing as a free lunch. Whatever you get from the FCC for "free," somebody else paid for. Those bureaucrats you claim are working "pro bono" are getting paid for every hour they put in on the job. They get benefits -- better than any you'll ever get. The utilities for their offices cost money. And on and on and on... Somebody's paying for all that. And for the most part, it ain't the general taxpayer.

And before you jump to conclusions, I am a TRUE "pro bono" consultant (work on my own time for $0) to a non-comm that runs on less than 40k/yr.

HOLY COW! THANK YOU! Talk about someone arguing a point to a ridiculous conclusion. HIS FEES ARE FREE BECAUSE COMMERCIAL OPERATORS PAY THE FREIGHT!

This guy runs a business? The aggregated expenses at the FCC are dumped on us.

I have spent a lot of time at the Commission. Both at their old location and at The Portals. I've never seen anyone there working for free.

JRY Look I understand what your point is, but understand my point. I have no fees because there are no fees. I'm not sure but I would speculate that non-comms are not charged a fee because congress probably mandated. Again, not positive. You say it is time that I start paying my fees? Where do I send them? I've never gotten a bill.

and YES I run a business. Several for almost 30 years. What does my view have to do with whether or not I can run a business. Geez. I'll just agree, at this point, to disagree. My best to you with your AM's.

Looks like an insider tried to do in WOBO. Not just get them a fine. He wanted to do them in. It is stuff like this that now makes me hate the radio business. Too much back stabbing.

I think it was someone who was on the inside but, now is on the outside, looking in.
You know how those deals go.

Maybe a better way to frame it is, you aren't paying any fees because all of the FCCs budget is the burden of Commercial Broadcasters. Anyways, i want to see you survive and thrive. Keep them on the air and serving your audience as we all know you have one.
The AMs are doing fine as are my FMs.
