FCC Flags Ownership, Public File Issues At WABG Greenwood, MS

Here are the details of how WABG-AM was hit with FCC complaints related to how "false statements" were in the permits.

The Federal Communications Commission has renewed the license of an AM in Mississippi while simultaneously finding multiple rule violations, including an unauthorized transfer of control and false statements to the agency. Even so, SPB’s “Awesome AM 980” WABG Greenwood, MS will still be on the air with its blues format after entering into a consent decree that resolves the violations and imposes compliance obligations.

At the center of the case is a 2015 ownership change that the FCC determined should have received prior approval. The Bureau found that one of the station’s principals, Bennie Wells, acquired the interests of the other two members — ultimately gaining full control — without filing the required transfer application and securing regulatory approval.

The Media Bureau also found WABG failed to meet several ongoing regulatory obligations. It says SPB did not upload required quarterly issues/programs lists to its online public inspection file, and the station failed to file multiple biennial ownership reports over several years. In addition, the Bureau concludes the company made false certifications in its license renewal application by stating it had complied with those requirements during the license term.

One correction (and this is not the fault of the original poster but of the article's author). Unless something has changed in the interveening years that I don't know about, WABG-AM is on 960 kHZ, not 980 kHz.

And now the FCC has given WABG a one year license renewal. From the license data, WABG operates on 960 kHz. With 1 kW Day and 500 watts Night with a three tower directional antenna. The studio and transmitter are together, just north of the city. I worked there in the mid-70’s when it was the sister station to WABG-TV. I’m guessing that economically, radio is not faring too well in Greenwood today; I just hope the station can survive.

In radio, a year goes by really fast.

when I was a teen, in the1960s, we used to visit this station, would watch the DJ, I think he was Dave Diamond perhaps....
I know that Dave Diamond worked on WDDT, 900, for a number of years in the 70’s. I met Dave Diamond once or twice and he seemed like a great guy. Ironically, I ended up working with another WDDT alum, Dade Moore, at KKBQ in Houston.
