FCC Grants New FM Station to Frankfort

Today, the FCC granted a construction permit to Hoosier Broadcasting for a new
radio station to be built on the west side of Frankfort with just under 1 kw.
Bill Shirk is the president of Hoosier.

If it's an AM station it has a chance to succeed. An FM station under 1 kw is somebody's plaything, not real radio.

It would be okay as long as I had realistic expectations. Like accepting the fact that hardly anyone will be able to pick up the station and that if I ever want to sell the station, not to expect that I'll even get what I put into it. Then it might be fun.

Admit it. You'd love to have a 1k stick to use as a plaything. Good for Bill.

1kW could do a decent job of covering Frankfort. Stations with less power than that have done well in simiklar size areas. A little thorn in the side of Vern.

91.5 is pretty crowded in western Indiana...WUEV is a full A in Evansville, WGRE in Greencastle (800 watts at 100ft) and now two small A CPs in Frankfort and Lebanon. Plus a full A in Casey, Ill.

Do most of these non-comms apply for less than full power, or is it a "we'll take what we can get" deal?

What I don't get is there are two 91.5 CPs licensed to Lebanon, but nowhere near it. One will cover Frankfort, and the other will barely reach Avon. I thought you still technically had to put a city grade signal over the COL?

Also, don't forget 91.5 WJCY Cicero http://www.jcfmradio.com/ - yet another low power 91.5.

Anyone have format ideas for the Lebanon/Frankfort station?

Also, don't forget WFWR 91.5 in Attica. I don't recall off hand the power they transmit, but the station can be heard marginally in Lafayette. With the Frankfort 91.5 getting a CP, it'll be interesting to see which station will win the over-the-air signal fight across Lafayette...then again, it'll probably be just as horrific as 106.7 sounds in Lebanon with WGLM and WTLC-FM clobbering each other.

Formatically, could Bill Shirk be thinking about making a network out of "Radio Mom"? For a non-commerical music station, WIRE in Lebanon sounds pretty damn good as a hot AC/CHR hybrid. Plus if they do go that route, the new station may give Shine 99 some much needed competition across Frankfort & Clinton County.

Let's face it. Bill Shirk is in a position that most of you can only dream about.
He can afford to run his radio stations any way he wants. He doesn't have
to jump for anyone. He is a guy who truly loves radio. Although he could
retire, he won't

Bill Shirk is a great radio guy all around and knows how to do radio.

WIRE is a great station in Lebanon, and I hear it has a strong listenership there, not to mention WHHH, WXLW, and some of the other stations he's been associated with in the past.

Whatever route he takes with the new Frankfort station will be a good one.

I'm trying to remember if it is 91.5 or 91.7. I could look at the CP or the CDBS...

This is a settlement of the Lebanon/Zionsville/Jamestown 91.9.

In MXed groups the FCC used to only allow stations to bow out of the MXed group if everyone got a CP. Harry martin is CSN's lawyer and figured out to get the FCC recently to allow Horizon to get a CP for 91.5 at Lebanon/Speedway in settlement. 100watts?

Mary Harris Foundation and Kid's First are still in 91.9 with Walsh being the winner in points.

Hoosier settled for the Lebanon/Frankfort.

Non coms are not required to place a 60dbu over their COL. Let alone a 70dbu. This means some stations are a hundred miles from their cities.
This is a minor change to amend the COL for non coms.
Non coms in our area are limited because of Channel 6 and antiquated (pre 1964) Rules based on receiver impact on 1964 technology.

Unlike the commercial band where everyone is 3kw (old rules) or 6kw (new stations) any station from 100 watts to 6kw is a class A. FCC allows stations to go on air with small signals.

BTW- Bill will be programming old WXLW skits he has saved for years on tape which he is converting to mp3 (sigh) and selected World Farting Championship bouts. My favorite is between Lord Windoschmear and Letta Bihgone. If you recall she was disqualified for more than just wind...

This new programming is expected to wipe out any other station, (did I say wipe?), in the immediate vicinity. We are having difficulty getting EPA approval for the site though...
