The fact is the FCC got out of the radio business before deregulation. When they got rid of 3rd phones and community ascertainment, they moved on to other things. Now, their top interest is getting responsibility for the internet. And if they do to the net what they did to radio, we're all in trouble.

I know the FCC changed many things about radio as we know it today, some not so good, but I would argue that much of what they did was good too.
That ascertainment stuff was nothing but mounds and mounds of paperwork that in many cases was either forged, fabricated or a combination of the two just to satisfy some paper shuffler at the FCC. Eliminating a lot of that kind of stuff allowed stations to concentrate more on the product than paying employees to satisfy all of those voluminous worthless requirements.

This is an excellent time for me to drop an F-bomb on the air...

I understand what you're saying, Steve, but I found the ascertainment process invaluable. I was able to target news and P-A coverage to things that made a difference to my community. That was years ago, and like you say, most stations didn't bother with putting any effort into an actual survey of needs. Now few stations generate news or public issues coverage, so it doesn't really matter anyway.
