FCC LOCALISM HEARING IN PORTLAND - 6/28/07

One of the six FCC "localism hearings" is actually happening in Portland! on Thursday at 4 PM to 11 PM, at Portland High School, 284 Cumberland Ave, Portland.

At least one, maybe more, of the FCC Commissioners will be there.

The program for this event will be:
4 PM to 5:30 PM: Panel Discussion
5:30 to 7:30 PM: Open mike for the public
7:30 to 8 PM: break
8 PM to 9:00 PM: Panel Discussion
9 PM to 11 PM: Open mike for the public

The "panel discussion" will be done by area station and group-owner station suits, therefore the most interesting part of this will be the 'open mike' for the public.

No reservations needed to take part. Reason for this whole event is for the public being able to speak to station owners about media localism, with the FCC observing.

This event will be audio taped and will later be available on FCC website.

actually, bob - i'd heard that people who wish to speak need to get their names on a sign up sheet before the start of the proceedings, then wait their turn to address the group. depending on how many show up, one might be waiting until 1045pm to get a chance.

the hearing is actually being carried live by one of the Portland area local access stations (TimeWarner Cable Channel 04). they are on a 30 minute break and will resume panel and public discussion at 8pm.

I realize this is after the fact, but one of the many questions I asked the 5 FCC commissioners who were at the hearing was this:

WHEN ARE YOU GUYS GOING TO STOP DOING "BUSINESS AS USUAL?" In other words...just collect the license renewel fees and take all the materials in a public file as absolute gospel? Then automatically renew a radio or television license for a few more years? Have any of your 'spies' actually spent a few days listening to some of the garbage that's going out over the airwaves?

Not a single member of the 5 responded to any of the above questions...as well as many public comments to revive THE FAIRNESS DOCTRINE?

Interesting how our government works...isn't it? :-[
