I recently heard the FCC has oened up an available slot in Vardaman, the license to be awarded in April 07. 6000 W, I think. Does anyone know anything about this?

1. Fcc aution 70...March 2007, Up front payment 20 K to qualify,

2. Short form application required in advance with the 20K.

3. See WWW.Fcc.gov and select auction 70 in search window.

Expect final bid to be high...the question is WHY?

The answer to your question...JBI

99.5... The Sweet Potato!

Vardaman, "The New YAM 99-5 FM" ain't the only MS drop-in. The list is below. The monetary amount shown is the minimum bid, and amount that must be ponied up to play.

I had to look up Marietta, MS. It's not too far from Booneville, but pretty isolated. It's not far from Hobo Station, MS (really!). Tupelo is not super-far down the road; I am not sure where the transmitter might fit.

Enjoy.

MM-FM558-A MS Greenwood 277 A 33 32 19 N 90 4 27 W 40,000 $40,000 $40,000
MM-FM559-A MS Holly Springs 243 A 34 41 32 N 89 32 33 W 40,000 $40,000 $40,000
MM-FM560-A MS Marietta 250 A 34 30 20 N 88 27 18 W 50,000 $50,000 $50,000
MM-FM561-A MS Vardaman 258 A 33 46 13 N 89 15 26 W 20,000 $20,000 $20,000

gosh all we need is another fm anywhere near tupelo.holly springs looks to be the only decent one.but shell out the bucks, looks like 4 more station for Flinn......folks with the loot get these channels if they are WORTH having and that's the way it is...

Precisely...But people wanting in the business simply cannot understand and/or accept the fact. "Not fair" They say. I agree, but as you say, that's the way it is.
When first allocated Marietta tower would have to be East of the town...this may have changed. Thanks JBI

Guess there's just no way for a little guy who loves radio to get a decent shot at starting their own station. 20K just to take a shot? Sounds like a game at the county fair. And why, as you say, would that be the case in Vardaman. I'm thinking another religous broadcaster may be in the mix.

I would give my right leg to have the city of Hobo Station in my legal ID!

To the gentleman who wants to know "why?":

These stations did not just magically "appear"...
Someone is out there who hired an engineer, found a frequency that would work,
prepared necessary engineering documentation. Then they hired an attorney (both
not cheap) to package it with the other data required by the FCC, and filed a petition to add the channel.

After a long wait, channel was allocated...but wait, you can't file until you are scheduled for auction...where we are now.

So wouldn't you expect them to step up to the bat to defend their investment?

Previous auctions have similar frequencies in small towns selling in the six figures.
Now may I ask again...WHY?

Starting from scratch in this business is no simple task and just like playing in high-stakes las vegas poker game. Cost a lot just to get in game and must have deep pockets to keep playing then there is very high risk you will loose anyway. That is the reality of it all and not for faint of heart or pocketbook. I think that is why he ask, WHY?

You nailed it, brother. If you want a station find one at a reasonable price, and buy it. (Yes, there are some that are reasonable, believe it or not) This from a 50 year
broadcaster. Thanks. JBI

There are bidding credits for those with no/minimal other stations, around 30%, I think. Anyway, sadly, these days there needs to be a better reason to start a station than love. As they say, Love don't pay the bills.

Speaking from experience, a commercial station in Vardaman will have to be run "lean and mean."

You know, you hear all kinds of crazy rumors. One of the latest has to do with a network wanting to fill some coverage gaps. But, who knows?

I keep going back to what Jboyd said about all the work someone has done to get to this point. Sounds like they think it just might work.

From what I can see, the Vardaman allocation is a byproduct of some signal upgrades and moves including quite a few stations in MS and AL. You can do an FM Query on the FCC database and get a link to a Docket 01-62. Use the short list. I must confess I don't understand it all.

I don't think a station in Vardaman is the first priority of the wrangling, I think the station in Vardaman is the result of the wrangling over some other issues.
