FCC & Net Neutrality

This is a fascinating Op Ed article in the Washington Post written by former FCC Commissioner Robert McDowell. He's a Republican, nominated by George W. Bush. He obviously opposes the current movement by the current Democratic FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler. Along the way, he likens some of the internet proposals to some of the now-debunked radio regulations of the past. By the way, the Congress has already gone on record saying it doesn't approve of the FCC assuming it has oversight of the internet. So even if the FCC passes some new regulations about the internet, they will likely be shot down by Congress. Although with THIS Congress, you never know.

"If consumers were being harmed by ISPs..."

This guy knows those are often cable TV companies, right?

The rest of the sentence is: "If consumers were being harmed by ISPs, ample antitrust, competition and consumer protection laws already exist to fix the problem."

Except the FCC, including McDowell, never objected to any of the mergers that have gotten us to this point. So our cable bill keeps going up, and we're now being charged for lots of things that were once considered the cost of doing business. Like a cable box.

Meanwhile, over at the Capitol, some Democratic Senators are pushing for regulation:
