FCC raids every pirate station

nd2023

Banned
Yesterday, every pirate station in Boston was raided by the FCC and shut down. Each owner was fined $10,000, and all the equipment was confiscated. The Boston Radio Dial is now much cleaner, and rapking's presets are all static.

I bet most of you knew this was a joke just by reading the subject of this post. The FCC will never do this.

Oh yeah? What makes you think that?

It's not happening anywhere. Occasionally the FCC goes in and busts one here and there (especially if a commercial station complains), but for the most part, they're just issuing fines that they ignore. I hear that some other major cities have even much more rampant pirate activity on the dial than Boston, and it's not being stopped. I hear that NYC has so many that it would probably take a small army for the FCC to raid them all at once.

This may sound like dumb question .......but........ what is a pirate station?

A pirate station is a radio station that is on the air illegally because it doesn't have an FCC license. The fact that you, on a radio board, asked what a pirate station is despite context that might suggest it's illegal, means that most of the general public doesn't know what a pirate station is. Touch 106.1 sounds so professional, it's often mistaken for a licensed station by the public.

Forget about the rest of New York City, just Newark, NJ has pirates on every available frequency, and on some frequencies, there are multiple pirates that interfere with each other. Brooklyn is just as bad, and so is the Bronx. The FCC doesn't even know about 95% of the pirates that exist, so how can they get busted? The ones the FCC knows about just get a little letter begging for $10,000, but the fines are never paid or collected. If the FCC does visit a station, all they do is take field strength readings and look at the transmitter and antenna system, the pirate usually remains on the air the whole time!

I wish they would let people like us volunteer to help locate and shut down the pirates. There are many people who would do it for free; engineers of licensed stations, listeners who get interference, police officers, radio geeks, etc. It's easy to locate a pirate with a portable radio, and 50 people including cops at the door of a pirate station will ensure that the owners don't fight. They should raid the stations that sell advertising and are obviously aware they are illegal and cause interference, and leave the iPod transmitters attached to a coat hanger alone.

If the pirate's running 1000 watts, you'll get a nasty RF burn trying to hammer a nail in the transmission line.

To further clarify the definition of a pirate station, those little transmitters you see kits advertised for are for the most part legal because they're covered under Part 15 of the F.C.C. rules & regulations. They are even called "Part 15" transmitters. Their range varies but the output is in the microwatt range so they don't step on others (imagine everyone in this country owning a transmitter). So even though they're unlicensed they're legal so long as no power amplification is made over a set limit. There are 4 broadcast bands covered: Longwave from 160-190kc., AM from 510-1705kc., SW from 13.553-13.567Mc. & the standard FM band on the odd spacings. Put a transmitter on 89.2 or 90.15 & you're again illegal!

Ever hear of a hammer with an insulated handle?

Even better, how 'bout a nail gun! P=) ;D P=)

Yes, I am replying to a 5 year old thread.

I know, from the name of the website that this is obviously not the most pirate friendly site. But, what a bunch of dicks. Talking about how you would volunteer to shut people down, or nailing shit through peoples personal property. I'm not sure where you live but there are about 5 stations that come in where I live, the music sucks, painfully, I would literally nail my testicles to the wall before listening to any of it. Broadcasting for a small community, is a lot different than 500 rude New England people all fighting over open stations and intruding on licensed airwaves.

It's no wonder people get shot for trespassing. Or beat up for getting in other peoples business. So have fun listening to and discussing the stupidest shit on the planet, commercial radio, what a joke... Who post 6k on any website? Some of you really need lives.
