The Macon station came on the air in 1968 as WDEN-AM, which began a legacy in country music for that market. Shortly after, they built an FM on 105.3 and simulcast for years...1500 was a 1 KW daytimer. I remember being told that they had to sign off at sunset to protect WLAC-1510. I think I saw something about WTOP (WFED) on 1500 being more likely (gotta check my old White's Radio Log).
The AM transmitter is still located on South Street, which (no one knows why) runs parallel to North Street, which is south of it. It' s a dumpy area near the "Old-Commodey River", where it shares space with abandoned mattresses, box springs and nearly-empty five gallon paint buckets.
Back then (when I was in high school), even small stations had several engineers. I went down there with three of them, to find a fried water moccasin in the bottom of the rig.
