FCC rules against Nassau. must give up WWHK, Concord

I just heard about this, probably from the same people you did. This has been gonna happen for some time as Nassau was clearly in violation of the FCC limits but, as usual in this matters, the Feds have taken their sweet time to take action.

I've also heard:

-Nassau and Vox (102.3's actual owners) have both been levied substantial fines for rules violations but my information is that Vox's lease agreement stipulates that Nassau will indemnify them from any liability.

-Prospective buyers include WTPL-FM owner Jeff Shapiro and WKXL-AM owner (ex- US Senator) Gordon Humphries who might be in a position to reap the benefits of a forced sale and pick the station up for a song.

-It's doubtful that Nassau has ever made money on WWHK 102.3 although the Lakes Region simulcast at 101.5 (The Hawk WWHQ) has done rather well.

Ok...so this isn't a big surprise. Nassau and Vox have been dancing with this silly agreement for 2 to 3 years. Nassau has been throwing appeals toward a decision that they knew would be shot down. The question is who will end up with the station? Shapiro has a shot and Humphrey would be a shame because he hasn't a clue as to what he's doing. Former GM Britt Johnson had put together a group to buy it a couple of years ago but my understanding is that he is working with some stations in another market now. I dealt with him in my ad agency and he and his old crew knew the market better than anyone...but is he interested in putting something now?? Nassau has done nothing but screw up the stations they bought.maybe they'll go away. The Hawk is a lousy sounding station anyway.

I think Brit (one T, not two) might have trouble getting the requisite financing together in a short time, then there's the lack of studio nad staff. The only thing Vox owns is the license for the 102.3FM frequency, the facilities and staff are all Nassau's. If Humphrey or Shapiro move quickly they can probably head off anyone else.

The studios that 102.3 used to use on Redington Rd are still operational I hear. Maybe Humphrey could charge a reasonable rent for their use (no doubt he needs the cash) which would buy Vox some time either to build new studios or sell it.

I think you're mistaken, studios for both Hawks are at Nassau's complex on Kimball Drive in Hooksett.

My sources tell me that Nassau will appeal the FCC Ruling which isn't too surprising otherwise why retain FCC lawyers.

The one thing Humphrey doesn't lack is cash. He has buckets full.

Let's just hope it doesn't go to EMF (Air 1, K Love)!

I've heard the New 106.5.
Music for the format is on target, talent is good and tight.

I expected bible thumpin' screamers. Sounds pretty good to me.

I'm not mistaken.
I know where the studio are now. The old 102.3 studio in the WKXL Concord building is still there and could possibly be used if Capitol needs to take control of the station quickly. I never said the Hawk was still on the air from there.
BTW, while the Hawk studios are in Hooksett, the "main studio" of 101.5 WWHQ is in Nassau's Gilford building.
As to Nassau's appeal...they are free to do so but the FCC order requires them to comply with unwinding the JSA immediately. They can't continue it during any appeal.

My bad NH Radio, before it was WNHW, 102.3 was WKXL-FM and was indeed broadcasting from Redington Road along with WKXL-AM so Sen. Humphrey does indeed have someplace to broadcast from (at least until that crappy little 1950s house falls down which could be any day now). So does Jeff Shapiro who could probably find room in the TPL Studios. Brit Johnson has no immediate access to any available broadcast facility that I know of.

What does Brit (who's a damn nice guy BTW) have to do with the current 102.3? Nassau riffed him a while ago in another of their patent-pending budget cuts.

I must say, nothing makes me HAPPIER than to read about this on Radio Inc a couple days ago. I LOVE the on-air staff there (well, the ones that are still left) but I feel it is radio karma coming back to bite Nassau in the a##. First, watching most of Nassau's ratings tank was great, but this is just an added bonus. Yes, I may be a little disgruntled that I was let go a couple years back in 'budget cuts' but good talent can always find a place on-air. I have continued to be employed on-air in NH since a couple months after I was let go and was just picked up in a market MUCH larger than the 'Nassau invented' Concord/Lakes Region (starting late August) So, go ahead, flame away, but this is just radio karma man.

Peace out.

Brit (yes, a terrific guy) has no connection with 102.3, my comment related to an earlier comment that he might be interested in buying it.

That's a stretch. You'd get a license and a site lease. No studio. No revenue. No programming. No good will. Maybe a transmitter if it's left behind.

It doesn't. It's barely audible where I live in Tilton. That's why they have 101.5 in the Lakes Region. WWHQ is licensed to Meredith and has a stick at the WLNH site in Laconia.
WWHK has some of the worst Class A coverage I've seen.

If signal gets into Lakes Region , entercomm should pick it up for the WEEI Sports radio network

Peace? You sound really bitter.
Everyone in this biz has gotten canned at least once (and most of us multiple times). Dissing your former employer just makes you look small.

Good luck with the new gig.
