FCC to KKOB: Power down to 1000 watts now

I should note that the FCC seems to be using KTTH in Seattle as a reason for this.

I'd believe it if they said they had to drop to 1000 watts at night ... but 1000 watts all the time? C'mon! I worked at a 1000 watt AM and you couldn't hear the thing outside the county.

I think it is sad they are doing a stunt like this - this cheapens the station. Plus, they are going to have all these listeners pestering important people like representatives, senators and - for god's sake - the FCC, where they are going really look bad and likely lose some friends. Bad, Bad, Bad. And embarassing for radio in general - makes all radio look like a joke. Would television ever do anything like this??? No surprise seeing something like this from Pat Frisch, but where is Milt - he is usually a pretty good head. I hope Milt goes on the air to apologize, and he should contact every significant client and apologize personally. And then roll some heads.

With Citadel's current (and quite long standing) tradition of stock prices dropping like rocks (now at $1.55 a share,) I wouldn't have been surprised to see Citadel drop power to save on that 50-gallon nighttime power bill, since they are making all those "changes" that are the fault of its stations ... and, certainly, not upper management...

Dumb.

Listeners don't listen for your power (except DXers) ... they listen to hear you in the first place.

But maybe Farid might want to consider this move to end the clutter on AM ... and to save a few bucks. Let's see, KKOB, WABC, (same frequency!), KGO, WLS, WJR ... yeah, it adds up!

I agree with ABQRadio. A cheap stunt, a waste of time - let alone "service" by doing a ruse like this and more to show how desperate terrestrial radio has become.

Now, I can sure see a stunt like "KKOB will, on Tuesday, become a thing of the past ...." and play airchecks of the legendary station all day and night. Or, play music for the day. Do something ... with creativity.

Think I'll drop a note to the PD ...

Actually, you do need the power. AM radio on a local level needs all the help it can get these days with all of those part 15 monsters (power lines, monitors, and other electronic devices).

This is a stunt, I give it a 6 out of 10. My question is what are they going to do with the names and emails their petition is accumulating?

If you use this logic then why wouldn't one of the 50kw NYC stations be told to power down to 1kw because of the need for Miami to have a 50kw clear? That area is growing by leaps and bounds.
Why not one of the or LA or SF stations? Why Alb?
Isn't New Mexico one of the fastest growing states in the U.S?
Isn't this some form of "eminent domain" issue?
What crap! (or crappe if you're a yuppie).

It's certainly a disappointing stunt by kkob mgmt if in fact it was a stunt. This business is tough as it is and pulling something like this is just plain stupid! Where is the trust? I understand the "entertainment factor" and hype - but doesn't the responsibility to the public eclipse that?

A little homework before running around crying the sky is falling: FCC website says KKOB just had its license renewed on 3/27 for 50kw day and night. License expires 10/01/2013 -- no foolin'! This is a typical Pat Frisch wisenheimner cocky boy tactic. He had a lady from Taos calling in Terrie Q. Sayre, the weekend host, first thing this morning frantic over losing her news source. So, Frisch gets a laugh out of upsetting listeners at their expense. Bob Clark (IMHO) is a class act way above what Frisch attempts to do when Clark is away. Frisch doesn't merit air time on their 1000 watt KTBL at night when you can't pick up a decent signal due to the interference out of Monterrey, MX.

Re:How long have you been In Radio?? FCC to KKOB: Power down to 1000 watts now

C'mon guys, you know this never would hold water. KKOB at 50,000 watts has been grandfathered since the FCC was formed in the 30's to protect New York City on the same 770 frequency. Only way something like this can happen if Clear Channel or Citadel ownwd both stations and agreed on making the change. Otherwise you work around KKOB...they don't work around you as far as the western portion is concerned.
I didn't buy this one bit.

As was said in the movie Stripes, "lighten up, Francis."

There have been worse April Fool's stunts, lame as this one is.

Not quite that far back - they've only been on 770 since 1941. Before that they were the dominant station on 1180 but with the big frequency shift of 1941 that ended up a Mexican clear with the other three U.S. stations split to 940, 1010, and 1130. (WMAZ, WINS, WDGY)

And it's my understanding WABC did fight KOB's 770 assignment tooth & nail.

But after 67 years I think we can say KKOB's presence as a 50,000-watt station on 770 is a done deal...

1180 is not and was not a Mexican clear channel; 1150 became, post NARBA, a regional channel and 50 kw WHAM moved to 1180 as a 1-A clear.

The occupants of 1180, in Portland, Minneapolis, NYC and Macon, went to 1190, 1130, 1010 and 940.

Mexico, through the 80's, had only 1 kw day and 250 watts at night on XEFR in Mexico City.

I remember hearing the fight went on until the mid-to-late 70's. Both stations floated various proposals to move the other one, but they couldn't mutually agree on any of them. I believe the last one was in 1978 with KOB proposing WABC be moved to 780. Of course, that one didn't sit well with WABC as they would have had to contend with WBBM in Chicago, which is much closer to New York than Albuquerque!

The power reduction has to be an April Fools joke, and a pretty lame one at that.
