February 10th....17 Years of 'KTU

I did read the article that MarckD wrote about the anniversary of losing country music in NYC proper with 103.5. If you haven't read it yet go check it out. He certainly is very passionate about country music in that sense. :)

I didn't want to respond on that thread about February 10th, 1996, but after a week of stunting with the final day being non stop repetitive heartbeats, the Beat Of New York launched on 103.5 bringing back the legendary call letters of the disco station that was on 92.3 in the late 70's to the mid 80's...WKTU.

For the first 10 years of its run, 'KTU (under PD's Frankie Blue and Jeff Z (Zuchowski) ran a mixed format of disco, freestyle, pop and recurrents along with current based dance music, which tended to get "edgier" during the night. There were mix shows on Fridays and Saturday nights (The "Factory" with various "levels"). The personalities on the station during that run were RuPaul, Michelle Visage, Hollywood Hamilton, Goumba Johnny, Diane Prior, "Broadway" Bill Lee, Freddie Colon, Lisa Taylor, Jewelz. Vic Latino and for a brief while Whoopi Goldberg. Perhaps the biggest moment of that era was early as the station launched the "Last Dance At Studio 54", which was SO hot that people were actually buying tickets (that were given away via phone call ins) on eBay. There were also specials such as the "Studio 54 Clubhouse" featuring Joe Causi and "Freestyle Free For All" featuring freestyle singer Judy Torres.

Things were beginning to change in 2006 as the station was shifting momentum in a new direction. Staples such as Broadway Bill Lee, Vic Latino and Jewelz were gone, the current edgier dance music was gone and more non-dance pop related material and CHR were added to the format. On September 9th of that year 'KTU emerged into a rhythmic A/C playing the more popular rhythmic music. Rob Miller became PD of the station. As some of the original staff stayed on, more staff was added such as Cubby Bryant, Bartel, Jagger, Wendy Wild, Judy Torres. Diane Prior eventually left leaving Hollywood Hamilton and Cindy Vero as the original on-air staff remaining. Eventually along the way more current based rhythmic material was added on, but still being reflected more on a CHR angle as opposed to being edgier. However the ratings have been very successful for the station and is one of the strong points of the Clear Channel cluster.

GRANTED, for me I was very critical about 'KTU back when it launched (and wrongfully so, I can admit that in hindsight). While they WERE playing some edgier dance at that time, to me I felt that it wasn't enough and that they could have done more being that this is New York City with a rich dance music history. Along the journey I thought more of the current dance was going to happen, especially when they added Vic Latino, who was known on dance stations such as Party 105 in Long Island and 95.3 Party down in Orlando. Yet come 2006, I had totally cleared away from the station once the tweak occured.

As of now, I would listen to 'KTU on occasion (if 92.3 Now didn't have something I liked) and for what it is today, and in a small degree you can credit the EDM revolution for this, they are leaning more current but still keeping to what the station had become post 2006.

I know there isn't that many of you that follow 'KTU in here, but as a small "survey" of sorts (and there's no wrong answer except for people who diss the music).......

WHICH KTU DO YOU LIKE BETTER?
a) 1996 - 2006
b) 2006 - present
c) Liked them both...not one better than the other

Thank you.

um, Tony? You know how your girl do it.....i go back with the old 'KTU - although kudos to the present version - they've certainly made their mark on the NYC landscape..... :)

You will likely have mixed emotions about my post but here is my thoughts.

IRONICALLY I HATE COUNTRY MUSIC - But I feel NYC still needs a Country station and such a format has an important place in NYC. I liked the 90's KTU far better than today's. Frankly, I personally think KTU should be like Now FM with a couple disco songs an hour plus a couple deep dance cuts an hour and maybe a rap an hour. By the way Rap is far less popular now than it was in 2011. The CHR Pop chart had about 1/3 of their chart rap back in 2011 and the Rhythmic chart was about 70 % rap. Now the Rhythmic Chart is about 40 % rap and the CHR/Pop chart has only a couple rap songs. CHR today seems to be a bit of every type of current pop sounds still in fashion. The Rhythmics in many cases are flirting with a rock song or two. Frankly I would like to see the Rhythmic CHR stations move toward dance music more.

As for a full time dance only station; Tough sell - not enough interest. BUT maybe an evening nightly deep dance show on WKTU would be good plus maybe a deeper dance type show on Saturday nights on WKTU as well and a Disco show Sunday Nights. KTU should be a Rhythmic CHR NOT a Rhythmic so called Hot AC. That is my view.

Ive followed KTU through out their history and I dont ever recall they having a "current edgier sound" for the mentioned time period.. what songs were current and edgy that they played?

I remember Days Go By but without a Mitsubishi commercial, they wouldnt have played it. Sandstorm was played for a bit. Modjo Lady was another club current at that time.. anything else?

I know Jay...I KNOW, lol :)

They were "late in the game" at times, but in comparison to what 'KTU is now, there was somewhat more dance branded product back then. It just seemed as if they "picked it up a bit" at night than during the day parts. Was it ultra-cutting edge? No, but compared to the daytime if there was something that dance fans could appreciate it was after 8PM. That's what I meant by "edgier".

Well, since 'KTU bills well with what they are doing now, we're not going to get any of those wishes. That's why it doesn't make any sense to even "bother" them about it. ;D

But the "not enough interest" part for a full time dance/EDM style station I do take STRONG objection to. I will always say that for over 1 million people to go through all that trouble searching around for an unfamiliar dial position (87.7) with a weak signal and no advertising about it other than word of mouth, shows the demand. And right now with EDM riding VERY high in the mainstream consciousness, there is no better time than right now to do a dance CHR/EDM style station.

The two things though that such a station should NOT have are 1) disco and 2) freestyle. And I say that because for the audience you are trying to go for with a current based dance CHR (EDM) station, it has to skew young. Sure, play recurrents but I wouldn't go deeper than 2000 on that. I think 'KTU beat disco to "death" unfortunately before the tweak which is why you don't really hear it. And just now they started playing a few of the classic freestyle tunes....but that makes sense because it fits the audience that 'KTU has.

Rap? At the very extreme...Pitbull, in terms of keeping the CHR element in there. But for the rest? NO.

I liked the KTU from 1996-2006. It's what got me into dance music in the early 2000s before Internet radio took off.

Some songs I associate with KTU:
Motorcycle - As The Rush Comes
Amuka - Appreciate Me
Mynt ft Kim Sozzi - How Did You Know
Angelo Venuto - L'Italiano and Ti Amo
Lasgo - Something
Danii Minogue - I Begin to Wonder
Reina - No One's Gonna Change You
Shape UK - Lola's Theme
Robert Miles - Children
Despina Vandi - Gia

Sad part, the current 'KTU would not play 85% of these tunes if they came out brand new right now.
