February 19: This Day in TV History

Just a few random TV related events that happened on February 19. Discuss or comment as you please……

1956: KINY-TV (channel 8, now KJUD) signs on in Juneau, Alaska.

1961: CFTM-TV (channel 10) signs on in Montreal, Quebec.

1966: Actress Justine Bateman (Family Ties) is born in Rye, New York.

1968: Mister Rogers' Neighborhood premieres on NET.

1972: "Bein' colored... I know you had no choice in that. But whatever made ya turn Jew?” Sammy Davis, Jr. makes his famous guest appearance on All in the Family.

1972: Color broadcasts begin in Brazil, utilizing the PAL-M system. It is the only country to adopt this “hybrid” system, combining PAL color with system M 525-line signals.

1985: EastEnders premieres on the BBC.

1994: Guest host Martin Lawrence makes crude remarks about female hygiene in his opening monologue on Saturday Night Live. All subsequent repeats of the episode would replace this material with a title card, and a voice-over explaining why the material will never be rerun, and how it almost cost the SNL cast their jobs.

1995: Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee marries Baywatch actress Pamela Anderson on a beach in Cancún.

1998: “Hey, Grandpa! What’s for supper?” Musician Louis Marshall "Grandpa" Jones (Hee Haw) dies in Nashville, Tennessee of complications due to a stroke, aged 84. (If you've ever seen early film/photos of Jones, he was already doing the "Grandpa" persona back when he was still a young man. Only difference is, by the time he was on Hee Haw, he no longer needed "old man" makeup to play the character...) ;)

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)

The "young" Grandpa Jones always looked rather
sinister to me. The Grandpa Jones I remember from
"Hee Haw" looked a lot friendlier. Did you mention
that his funeral was held at the Grand Ole Opry and
that he was the only country star ever accorded that
distinction?

The Brazilians are using a one off standard for their digital TV. They use SBTVD, a variation of the Japanese ISDB-T standard. They are the only country using it, but Argentina, Chile, and Venzuela are considering it.
