Sorry, Dave, you've really stepped in it with your comments on this board.

I respect what you accomplished in Phoenix radio. But that was years ago. Like so many in our world you continue to try to live off legacy not reality. DavidWhatsHisRealName is right on.

It's ironic to read your critique of a bunch of the valley radio stations when you consider this is coming from a guy who hasn't been #1 or even near #1 in ratings in a very long time. Anyone who has access to the ratings know this. Let's get real, CBS decided it was better to pay you hundreds of thousands of dollars a year and have you off the air rather than on the air. When you start criticizing other stations you open yourself up for criticism as well.

You talk about other stations being "safe." I wasn't an everyday listener of yours but every time I tuned in you were talking to Gonzo, Mark Curtis, or about yourself. I'm not sure that's all that original.

KOOL is not oldies. It's classic hits. And the 35-54 demos in Phoenix are not a lot different from any other fast growth southwestern market.

Indeed. I use to stay away from KOOL because I always knew it to be "oldies" during the time I was forced to hear it as a youngster. It was either "Big Girls Don't Cry" or Leader of the Pack" among many other horrible mono recordings. I rediscovered them about a year or 2 ago, and was amazed that they now play stuff that I grew up on (I know some will laugh, but I suppose I'm getting old)! For example, I now hear Steely Dan, Blondie, Hewy Lewis, Phil Collins, Stevie Wonder, EWF, and so on. It's quite refreshing and I think anybody who considers KOOL boring is judging them off their previous format.

He said he would not sign on this board again. Perhaps you can email him? lol

Well he was lurking on here last night, signed in and everything. Maybe he
needs to register again with a "handle" so he could...oh wait, that would go
completely against his "real names" mantra. ;D

I promise I won't forward this post to Phil Spector at the big house. ;)

What's wrong with Nickelback?

I guess the masses enjoy butt rock! I am the minority I suppose.

butt rock, ha,ha! Now I'll think of that every time I hear it=it's one of the few things we're allowed to listen to at work, that should have told me something!

I don't care for the real name argument. If everyone used their real name there would be far less participation and the discussions would mostly be bland. Besides it's not just R-I, most message boards I have ever seen on any topic have tons of users who use aliases. It's part of internet culture and I see nothing wrong with it.

What? Nickelback is one of the only things you're allowed to listen to at work?

Only that, Matchbox 20... and Enya. :p

I think David Eduardo's real name is David Gleason. His website has been linked at the bottom of every post he's ever made under the DE name. He did use another username at one time, "Old Gringo". He changed it, not because of "fear" (and I think it's kind of funny that people keep bringing that up-there are other reasons besides fear to use a message board name, these folks remind me of a group of middle school boys sneering "chicken" at the loners on campus), but I suspect because trolls were all over him to the point where he couldn't get a valid statement posted without a huge hassle. (Though he put up with it longer than anyone else would have and tried to reason with the buttheads). And for the record, though what David says is often a bitter pill to swallow (for me included), 90% of the time he's right. I lurked on this board for many years before I ever posted and have seen this proven out time and again.

he's also "Countryboy" on All Access

If "David Eduardo" ever comes out of the bushes to use his real name and accepts my barbecue invite, let's all promise to sober him up. Lowell Observatory is still trying to come up with a name for the lonely planet he is on. Did he really say that it has been a long time since Phoenix had the demographics and psychographics for a major country station? Somebody may want to remind him that it was only about 18 months ago, during the summer of 08' and my last full ratings sweep on KMLE with Big Shoe Stu and the rest of a great air staff, that KMLE was flat out #1 25-54 and flat out #1 in overall revenue. In addition, Phoenix continues to be a top 10 leader in concert attendance for country artists and a top 10 market for country sales, including over the counter product and downloads. David Eduardo, or whatever name you are using today, there are smart people on this board. Don't expect everybody else to lower the bar to believe your personal agenda.

And still, the question remains to be asked. How can the top 10 stations not include a country station in a market that in all other measurements, demographics and psychographics is a priority country powerhouse? This is unbelievable! The answer most likely falls in deep budget cuts, the recipe itself and the chefs in the kitchen. I absolutely loved working in the country format, the listeners, and the artists. It is sad to see Phoenix in this embarrassing position.

I agree with Pratt. The reason the two country stations are drowing in 2 and 3s is they were gutted. Stripped of great programming, marketing and talent. Baffles me why owners/gms stilll can't figure out why they pull 10th place 25-54 after being #1 just two years ago. Duh! It's your stupid greedy selves!

By the way..Hispanics still love country in San Antonio and most of South Texas.

And in San Antonio, only about 25% of Hispanics are Spanish dominant, while in Phoneix the percentage exceeds 60%. In San Antonio, the vast majority of Hispanics have family that has been in the city and region for many, many generations. Such is not so in Phoenix... there is only a small portion of the Hispanic population that would be interested in country.

An anecdote comes to mind. Years ago, I worked on a non-radio project with a person from New Mexico whose last name was "Olguin" a name which is usually spelled "Holguin." I asked about the spelling, and she said that the name had been spelled that way since the family arrived in the area. I inquired when that had been, and she said it was sometime in the 1600's. When I asked why she did not speak Spanish, she said nobody in the family had spoken Spanish since around 1860!

That anecdote plays for much of south Texas, where there are families whose heritage goes back 200 years or more... and, of course, folks with that heritage would have the same diverse tastes in radio and music as any other later-generation Americans would.

But that's not the case in Phoenix, which has nearly no third and fourth generation and beyond residents when compared to first and second generation residents... who have nearly zero affinity for country.
