February 2012 Ratings Rundown

The February numbers are in, and WWJ remains #1 with a 9.0 share. If you think U-M Basketball is helping that share, maybe March is good to 950 before that comes down in April. Mix 92.3 jumps to #3 with a 6.1. WJR is at a 5 share. 95.5 is blowing away AMP, and WOMC is #2 with a 7 share. Doug took a bit of a tumble, and needs to get momentum back quickly(you know why), AMP and 106.7 made a miniscule improvement, and 89x is at 2.0. If chrocket87 made a post before this, I apologize. If not, what jumped out at you?

Not this book, as it's been a damn busy week for myself. My notes:
-Another huge book for WWJ and WOMC.
- For the first non-Holiday book in some time, CBS does NOT own the top 3 stations. Congrats to Mix for breaking that one.
-Speaking of for the first time in awhile, 95-5 is posting it's best 6+ position since Amp came to the scene.
- Sharp drop for Doug. However, I don't see Nash 93.1 anytime too soon.
-89x just keeps falling. In fact, it's almost as low as the River, which has seen some nice gains over the past two books. I don't think it will be long before Bell decides to make some changes with at least one of the two stations.
Thoughts?

89x just gave their morning show a title, so maybe they will try Cal Cagno out in the morning for a bit until they can find something better. Other than that, it seems like people who loved Dave and Chuck "the" Freak are taking it out on the other dayparts. As for grabbing onto the Nash 93.1 hint, I agree, but Doug can't have drops like that with Cumulus having a format they think could work, oh, and the Country station here is top 5 in the ratings. I thought maybe Mix would jump up next book with Frankie Darcell returning early this month, but I guess not. I think AMP's problem is that they sound like they are trying to compete with 96.3 as well as 95.5, and it's not working. You can't fall a share and some below your competition and then try to steal shares and listeners from a station over a share ahead of both stations. Crawl before you walk. As for the River, it's nice to see them make some strides, but I still think we can get more from them musically.

ALL ACCESS presents FEBRUARY PPM market highlights, compiled by the Ratings Experts at RESEARCH DIRECTOR, INC. and powered by XTRENDS, radio's #1 PPM and diary analysis tool. All numbers reflect subscriber only data.

At this time of year, the only thing that is hot in the MOTOR CITY is what is emanating from the transmitter at CBS RADIO News WWJ-A. The station was up for the third straight book (8.3-9.0) to solidify its hold on #1. To think, a year ago the station was a mere #4 with a 5.8 share. Cluster compatriot CBS RADIO Classic Hits WOMC also had its best book in over a year (6.7-7.0) but had to settle for a solid #2. A third cluster brother, CBS RADIO Country WYCD was off slightly (6.3-6.1) and remained at #3, though it is now tied with CCM+E Urban AC WMXD (MIX), which jumped up from #5 with its best book in over a year (5.4-6.1). CUMULUS Hot AC WDVD slipped a spot to #5 (6.1-5.7).

Though it may have dipped a bit in the overall rankings, WDVD continued to own the market 25-54. It might be hearing footsteps as WMXD had a killer book and moved from a tie at #4 to #2. CBS RADIO Sports WXYT-F (THE TICKET) was as flat as the ice at The Joe to remain at #3 while its cluster brother, WYCD, slid a couple of slots to #4. In DECEMBER WWJ-A was ranked at #16 but after three straight up books, it is set at #5. This came as bad news to GREATER MEDIA Active Rock WRIF, which had its best book since OCTOBER but fell from a tie at #4 to #6.

The 18-34 world was turned asunder as CCM+E Top 40/M WKQI (CHANNEL 955) came roaring in from the pack (#4 to be precise) by posting a huge number to take over #1. This displaced to #2 its cluster roomie CCM+E Urban WJLB, which had been one of two stations to share the top spot. WGPR INC Urban AC WGPR had another great book but was forced to settle for being the #3 station. The other half of the #1 duo from last book, WDVD, popped its lowest number since SEPTEMBER to fall to #4. Despite its second straight strong book, WYCD was content to settle for remaining at #5.

While WDVD did follow its best-book-in-over-a-year with something a little less robust, it managed to hold on to the top spot 18-49. WKQI’s surge was also apparent here as it moved from #6 to #2 with its version of the best book in over a year. WJLB’s ever-so-slight slip caused the station to drop a spot to #3 as did WYCD, which fell to #4. The ripple effect affected WXYT-F, too, as the station went from #4 to #5.

The Ticket remained off their top pace even with the return of Hockey. CBS Sports Radio Network on AM 1270 is not lighting any fires in Detroit and the Clear Channel stations were generally improved in this book.

CBS Sports Radio not catching on quickly is no surprise. 1, They are a new network, so there is likely no panic, plus, for having Jim Rome and Ferrall on the Bench, there's a lot of meh in that lineup. 2, The respective seasons by the Pistons and Red Wings are hurting 97.1. Expect March numbers to stay where they are or go up slightly before things pick up in April, and that could be true for both stations considering a few Tigers games will end up on 1270 am.

1270 serves to promote the CBS Sports brand. Think of it like Radio Disney, only with Sports and value added buys for 97.1. CBS needed somewhere to put their national brand so they could have market clearance in Market #12 and use that for national buys. 1270 will never be much of a ratings factor, just like it is not in Philadelphia or any other market that it exists in. If it can bring in more bucks to the CBS national brand and/or 97.1, it's done its job.

That makes a lot of sense. 1270 should want to get a few ticks in the ratings considering 'DFN's poor lineup, and lack of sports talk before 4 or 5 pm on the weekends, and ESPN 1090 is still kind of a secret.
