February 7: This Day in TV History

Just a few random TV related events that happened on February 7. Discuss or comment as you please……

1953: WHAS-TV (Louisville, Kenutcky) moves from channel 9 to channel 11 to alleviate interference with Cincinnati’s WCPO-TV.

1965: Comedian/actor Chris Rock (Saturday Night Live, Everybody Hates Chris) is born in Andrews, South Carolina.

1965: WVIZ-TV (channel 25) begins broadcasting in Cleveland, Ohio. It is the 100th public television station to sign on in the U.S.

1966: The U.S. military begins Stratovision transmissions to South Vietnam. The airborne transmitters include TV channels 9 (in Vietnamese) and 11 (in English), FM radio on 99.9 mHz, and AM radio on 1000 kHz. The inaugural broadcast of the English TV service includes such shows as Bonanza, Perry Mason, The Ed Sullivan Show, The Tonight Show, and a two-hour Bob Hope special. The subsequent regular daily schedule would comprise 1 ½ hours daily on channel 9, and 3 hours daily on channel 11.

1972: Actress Robin Lively (Doogie Howser M.D., Twin Peaks, 30 Rock) is born in Powder Springs, Georgia.

1978: Actor Ashton Kutcher (That 70’s Show) is born (as Christopher Ashton Kutcher) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

1979: The biggest transportation disaster in world history: Supertrain premieres on NBC.

1988: America’s Most Wanted debuts on Fox.

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)

Also on this date, along with the channel change, WHAS-TV put the first high-power, high band VHF transmitter from General Electric on the air. This made WHAS-TV the first high-band station to operate at the maximum 316,000 watts ERP. It was the most powerful TV station in the nation for several months.

I remember seeing this HUGE GE apparatus right before it was taken out of service and disassembled years later...the transmitter building had to darn near be re-built due to the difference in size between the old unit and the much-smaller new one!

WAVE was moved from Ch. 5 to Ch. 3 because
of short-spacing to WLWT Cincinnati. Does anyone
know the date of that change?

I believe it was March 5, 1953. During their recent 60th Anniversary observation, WAVE-TV showed some kinescopes with the old Channel 5 station ID's...thank goodness someone archived them so long ago.

And it was cancelled briefly in 1996 before a viewer/law enforcement backlash un-cancelled it after a month and a half.

Remember, you can make a difference. ;D
