CC has actually been launching classic hits stations as "Magic." I still don't see how Lite is losing out like they are, but if it doesn't get any better or if they do worse, I could see them trying it if the station gets to a point where the performance warrants a flip. A return of "Magic" would be awesome.ABM said:Bring the MAGIC back to 102.9! The Carolina's Greatest Hits Station! I'm sure you will see a boost of excitement from the older demo..
Um, okay - so what name would you replace it with other than "Magic." That name is used a lot in other markets so it solely does not belong to Charlotte. I mean, yes it was once used in Charlotte but the return of "Magic" would be a good fit/name cause I can't think of any other name that would classify an 60'-70's type-station. I'd say, if Lite's number's continue to indeed stagnate, they will tweak their format or put their format that goes along in the direction with Fresh 100 (Detroit) or My 102.5 (Greenville, SC). But it would be great if Classic Hits did return to the Charlotte radio dial. That to me, is the thing I'll be following closely along with Kiss 95.1 and their tough battle with reigning CHR, Channel 96.1. Funny, we have a CBS-Clear Channel war going on: one CBS station (104.7) is doing well and their competitor, that is a CC (102.9) is not doing so great. And for CHR, we have a Clear Channel (96.1) doing well, and for the CBS, not doing as well (95.1). Haha, we should continue to wait and see. But damn, I know CBS won't let go of Kiss 95.1 if their number's are below a -2.tylerSC said:Classic Hits may be a viable alternative if Lite continues to stagnate. But just don't use the name Magic in Charlotte; let that cherished name rest in peace. That name is already associated with the former version on 96.1, and would be confusing somewhat with Magic 98.9 whose signals overlap. Just call it Classic Hits 102.9, or some other name. Then maybe 107.9 could be more Hot AC, and 104.7 more mainstream AC, or vice versa.
Ever since K-104 came on the air, I always thought Lite had a more solid AC playlist. It was always quite traditional. At first, K-104 was old leaning, then mainstream AC, back to old leaning, hot leaning - but now they seem to have settled in to a mainstream playlist that's not that bad. My main issue with them is that they're so...volatile. However, with their numbers being so good lately, I doubt they'll make any more major adjustments since they've found something that's working for them. I don't mind the jingles, but I don't know if they really fit the music they play.wpb1999 said:I have a home in Gastonia, and I usually prefer listening to 102.9. I used to listen to 104.7 a lot until they started playing the Moves Like Jagger and the Let's Go Green (which has finally stopped, thank god!)..... It might be silly, but I still tune into K for the KOST jingles. I love them. I wish Lite would bring back a local morning show, I think that is why K is currently winning. No one I know of likes "Valentine". I don't know, I just guess it is Clear Channel Magic, like always.

Just a comment: I was at UNCC on Friday and at the softball field, music by the Jackson 5 was playing. It was followed by something that people on the AC board will argue was not hot AC, so it wasn't radio. But does anyone in the market play the Jackson 5?carolinaradio said:I've tried to respond to this twice, and lost it, so here goes again...
I think classic hits would do well whether it was called "Magic" or not. I actually think the association with the former 96.1 would be beneficial. The difference, though, would be that the new "Magic" wouldn't have a playlist much like the old one - the new one would play mostly 70s, with some 60s and 80s. The old one played mostly 60s with some early-mid 70s. I think the pros of the name outweigh the cons. CC has classic hits stations named "Magic" in Cleveland, Jacksonville, and VA Beach. Heck, a lot of them are just "Oldies ___" (Milwaukee, Portland, St. Louis, Columbus, Seattle). Boring.
