February Ratings

WLW #1. WGRR #2 with a three-month trend of 7.0-8.6-9.3
WNNF Great Country 94.1 went over a 3-share. First time I believe 94.1 has gone over a 3 since they were the Triple-A format.
"The Project" up to a 1.0 for the first time.
None of the sports stations are doing well. WCKY 0.8, WSAI 0.3, and The Fan at 0.2 (and last in the ratings) like last month.

I've always heard in the biz and seen re-emphasized on these boards that ratings aren't that important for sports stations. They tend to generate revenue and are fairly cheap to run.

I'm wondering when The Fan is going to start doing some promotion though. I've seen nothing except for the link to the TV commercial in another thread here. How are sports "fans" supposed to know they even exist? I like Gamble and Skinner is OK, but I would sure like to start hearing some callers to add a little variety.

Radio One has always had problems with promoting their stations. TV ads have never been a big favorite of their agenda. With the competition that the FAN has they need to really get out of the studio as much as they can. Do as many shows at Sports Bars as possible. Offer to be a speaker at the local civic service organizations, and this spring and summer do as many remotes at the festivals and various events as you can. Also get as many guest stints on the late Sunday night TV sports shows.

To billf82 you are right that you can generate revenue from a sports station that is not a ratings leader. The number one billing station in New York for years was a sports station with low ratings. The questions to be asked are: Does the Fan's PD have extensive experience programming a sports station? Early returns indicate no with the hiring for afternoon drive. Does the GM and Sales Manager in Cincy have experience selling a sports station. It is a different animal thanselling a FM music station or Gospel/ Talk station.

In short -it is noble Radio One kept the key people in place with the move. The bad move was not bringing in someone in addition who really knows what sports radio is all about.

I realize it is very early in the game because you have to be patient in building a Sports station. The question here will Radio One at the corporate level stick with it for the long haul.
