February ratings....

Wow... Power 96.1 is 4th overall. Seriously, how long has it been since a (PURE) Top 40/CHR station in Atlanta has been this high in the ratings? Maybe in the 80's with Power 99?!

Thoughts?

My thoughts exactly. This has been a great book for CHR in Atlanta, considering the huge book Power delivered and a strong book from Q just behind it.

Looking at OG, they've posted the best ratings I've ever seen on one of the ATL translators- and that's WITH two competitors. Cumulus should consider moving it to the 106.7 signal, which still has yet to gain any sort of traction.

On the Urban side, V103 is holding on to it's #1 rankings but with that signal it's expected. However, KISS and MAJIC must be feeling the pressure from all 3 classic hip-hop stations. What happened to HOT? They've seemed to bottom out in the 3 shares nowadays. The younger Urban demo must be tuning into STREETZ. I know these are overall number but they paint whats really going on in ATL radio today.

100.5 has finally gained traction as an alternate to 97.1 (2.3 / 4.6) 6+. Do not know about AM drive or money demos but, 97.1 might have some competition. IMHO this could make both stations stronger like the 96.1 made Q 100 a better station.

Could it be that Power 96 and Q100 are playing off of each other? Such healthy competition is sometimes beneficial for both stations.

I don't think the OG is hurting Magic and Kiss that much. I've finally decided that the OG only plays about 10 songs that I like........so I will catch them only if nothing else is on, which happens a lot. However, if the OG were on 106.7 I think they would be right up there with Magic and Kiss.

As always Atlanta has about 7 stations just sitting and happy with their dismal ratings. It is long past time for these slackers to move on and try something new. What didn't work in 1999 is still not working today!

My personal thoughts:

I wish B98.5 was more Soft AC, play more 70s, 80s $ 90s music. I feel there music crosses over to much with Star. Stop playing the same artists on four different stations.

What's the deal with Radio 105.7? I do not think they are a good, sounding Alt Rock station. You think a change is in the air? But to what? Or is iHeart Media going to fix it up and rebrand it to "ALT"? Does the demographics not really support a station such as this compared to other cities, Denver for an example? I think there station (KTCL-FM) is so much better sounding than Radio 105.7.

Please someone bring a Classic Hits (70s-80s) to the radio dial. Ahem.... 97.1FM.

No, 97.1 should stay Classic rock only. we do need a Classic Hits station that tosses in a little of the 60's also. Now a Classic station that plays BOTH Hots and Rock would be awesome. Either WSB or Star.

If anything, iHeart would rebrand it to "Alt". While the station is very pedestrian sounding (it is owned by iHeart, so not surprising) and the demos may not be as alternative-friendly as Denver or Portland, there's definitely an audience for alternative in Atlanta and iHeart is generally committed to the format. In Columbus (OH), they've launched their Premium Choice alternative for the third time, despite mostly miserable ratings and hardly competitive with heritage WWCD. That said, Radio was routinely top 5 in 18-34 prior to the launch of X. At least we can say Cox accomplished SOMETHING with this signal (which, IMO, should go to Classic Hits).

Yes alex_0490 since B-98 changed directions, they threw a ton of retro tracks out the window, and as of yet nobody has been able to pick them back up. Much of those songs are still M.I.A.

I wanted to touch on the AC issue as well. It seems everywhere ACs are moving toward becoming what Hot AC was up until a few years ago (80s,90s, but 50 % recurrents and currents). It's a different sound for sure, but it seems to be working. My local AC plays songs like "Yeah" and "Kryptonite". Who'da thunk it?

60s are dead on the air...especially in a younger city like ATL. One big hole in Atlanta, as I have mentioned before, is variety/adult hits. The closest we have (geographically) is Cox's 103.7 Chuck FM out of Gainesville.

Variety hits is probably the biggest hole, with soft/mainstream AC and classic country next. Although you could argue that NASH Icon 98.9 has classic country covered.

I thought that Chuck was out of Athens. It would be great if they would increase their signal to be heard full time around the entire metro area (or at least the top end).

People ask if young people listen to OTA radio. The answer is yes, and their numbers are growing, as evidenced by the growth of stations like Power. You're going to see more of this, and it could really start to change the landscape a bit. We're seeing it in a lot of places besides Atlanta.

What's interesting to me is the number of HD stations that are showing up. Perhaps more in Atlanta than any other market.

97.1 HD2 - It's beyond me why they won't move that over to X107.

B98 - I know I'm going to catch hell for this but ever since B98 removed the older tracks and went more Hot AC'ish, their ratings have increased. Can't say their move was a bad one all be it, we have an obvious hole in Atlanta radio. Perhaps Star can move in a more ac'ish direction with their ratings dip thanks to the B98's Hot AC'ish drift.

Power is doing well. I'll be the first to say that I'm surprised. I eat my words from three years ago when I said it would DIE a horrible death. With Q now losing the number 1 spot for CHR, I would like to pose a honest question. I'm not using hyperbole here - I'm being honest.... Does Cumulus Radio give a rats a$$ about the Atlanta cluster? I seriously wonder if they even care.

Back to X107 and Radio 105 - Lack of variety in Alternative = DEATH SENTENCE. Corporate radio needs to stop treating alternative as if it's an alternative form of Top 40. As I said above, Other Side of the River (HD2) needs to move over to X107. It covers the older stuff which X107 doesn't touch and unlike Radio 105, it digs a lot deeper into the 80s and 90s. I don't think Radio 105 even touches the 80s and the 90s they play are all big hits which goes against the alternative brand. OSOTR could improve with newer stuff but still - They sound much better than the other alternative stations in Atlanta.

The alternative rock community needs to figure out what it is, what it wants and who its audience is. This is a music problem, not a radio problem. Radio stations have lots of other more profitable genres they can play with co-operative artists who actually value the airplay and want to promote their music.
